How the #&%! Did This Miss A Best Picture Nomination?

Though tagged for writing and two performances, it somehow ended up behind the forgettable “A Touch of Class.” I am certain it was in sixth place and just barely missed.

Apparently it didn’t do well upon its initial wide release in February 1974. Once the nominations came out, Columbia rereleased it with a new, more-appealing poster. As we know, Oscar doesn’t like to give out top honors to movies that don’t bring in the coin.

Yes, "A Touch of Class" is a really dull lightweight romantic comedy - you'd think the more prominent "The Way We Were" would have filled that slot, not that that's any better

There are so many excellent releases that year that could have enhanced the Best Picture race - The Last Detail, Paper Moon, Mean Streets, The Long Goodbye, Serpico, Last Tango in Paris, Papillon, O Lucky Man, The Paper Chase, Save the Tiger, The Last American Hero, Scarecrow, etc.

Those are some great picks but I think, honestly, TLD beats them all.
