YUP...GREAT MOVIE.THE POSTER HAS ALWAYS IRKED ME THOUGH.

LMAO before I clicked on this thread I was thinking The Village People.

The 80s were a very fun and sad time in the gay community. Last month I went to a funeral of a very successful doctor who paid the price of being promiscuous in the 80's.

I cannot imagine that period being "fun" at all for gays, not even in the vein of "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times." I was just a kid back then, but I remember the harrowing news reports back in '83 about this "mysterious disease called AIDs" that was sweeping the gay community. Of course, I can't speak for what it was like but it just seems odd to me to hear that period described as that.

We all have to have fun and laugh, no matter the horrible situation you find yourself in. The human spirit can be an amazing thing.

reply

Kind of the movie’s entire point.

reply

Me too.

Yes, it's a very "gay" poster. I couldn't tell who it was in the poster and half expected it to be somebody like Brad Davis.

Given where Nicholson's weight went over the years -- its hard to believe he was ever thin enough to pose shirtless for a movie poster.

And he wasn't even that thin THERE.

its a funny thing about our male movie stars. Across most all of the Golden Era and then even into the modern age(Nicholson came in with a New Hollywood of the 70's that is now Old Hollywood)...male movie stars generally had to stay thin or in shape ala Arnold and Sly.

A very small number of male movie stars lost their battles with weight: Marlon Brando(first.) Then Nicholson. Then Travolta.

But they are rather the only ones. Newman and Redford and Pacino and DeNiro all kept the weight off. And three of them are still alive.

I immediately thought of Brad Davis and Franco Nero in Querelle (1982).

I just came here to post the same thing. I like the movie but the DVD cover is much too gay to keep in a straight collection.
