1970's East Coast...

This film, one of my all time faves, is also a great look-back at the dirty, grimy but ultimately more "human" of the cities of NY and Boston of my youth.

Although I was too young (born in '63) to partake of any adult activities in those towns then...they just seemed to have more character to them then.

Agree with other posters here...just a perfect film, don't make em like this anymore.

You're right on, these cities did have more character in those days. I just saw a very tense and compelling film called "Day Night Day Night" filmed partly at Times Square and 42nd St. It was pathetic to see what that spot has become - nothing but endless chain restaurants and stores. I wanted to throw up. Can't we have something in the middle, between the NYC of "Midnight Cowboy" and today. This is what I fear will happen to New Orleans - a Disney-fied version, cheesy, another Orlando we don't need in this world. Thank Diety for Europe!!!

Thanks, glad I'm not the only one!!! Not to say I want the wanton-ness (word?) of a Times Square/42nd St in NYC or a Combat Zone in Boston but an East-Coast as you said, that isn't "Disneyfied" or completely stripped of its character/nature as most of America is quickly becoming in the 21st Century.

This film is so great on so many levels, but the "look back"/travel-logue on a Washington DC to Boston train ride of 1973 is definitely one of its charms.

Check out "Times Square" and "Fame" for gritty NYC.
