CGI remake?

What do you think? If they were to do a CGI remake of this film, perhaps give it some good writing and visuals like "The Golden Compass", or give it a good director like Spielberg, could it be done?

reply

CGI wouldn't be a bad idea, but before they make a remake I think that people should take awarness of this film first. It is so underrated and shamefully overlooked that I think it deserves a look from the majority of audiences before a CGI remake is approved.

It's an interesting idea. Certainly most of the film's weaknesses derive from the use of live seagulls, and those weaknesses could be eliminated with CGI seagulls if scripted correctly.

I don't think it will happen, though, at least not in the near future. In "The Bridge Across Forever", Bach (who holds the copyright, of course) talks about how furious he was at his book being ruined with this dreadful film adaptation, and he was very leery about ever allowing another movie to be made from one of his books ever again. Unless he's changed his mind about that, or unless the person who inherits the copyrights after his death (whoever that is) feels differently, "Jonathan" will probably never be remade.

You're right about the "near future", but copyright only lasts 70 years after the creator's death, whether passed on through inheritance or not. Eventually the story will be public domain, and then anyone can make their own movie version.

That's true, but even if he were to pass away today, and even if we assume that Congress doesn't extend the copyright laws (as they've done many times in the past), that's still seventy years. It's probably just about impossible to know what filmmaking is going to be like in the year 2080, assuming that it even still exists at all and hasn't been replaced by a completely new paradigm -- there are, in fact, already signs that that is happening (e.g., people moving to home theater instead of going to the cinema itself).

We'll have to remember to get together when the time is up and compare notes about the subject. ;-)

I like it best with real seagulls. They could improve on the audio instead, matching voices to the visuals better. Or even better: just skip the human dialog and have subtitles that tells us what the seagulls says.
