New DVD Box Set

I am just notifying everyone who does not already know that the entire series is going to be released in a box set edition on October 19, 2004. Each one of the five films can also be bought individually. These editions are region-1 and are being released by Home Vision Entertainment, so you can expect excellent quality. Recently, HVE has already released Graveyard of Honor (which is also a really great film) and Street Mobster. These are all yakuza classics by Fukasaku, and especially the Battles without Honor series redefined the yakuza genre. These are very serious films, with serious social commentary, but are also immensely entertaining. These are MUST SEE yakuza films.

It's out as of the 14th. Picked it up myself and I'm very impressed.

The metal cover case rocks my socks... gunmetal baby!

The movies are awesome. Friedkin's remarks on them and on Fukasaku himself are great to hear. Sweet set.

Oh yeah! No 3D without 3D glasses!

I'll be saving up money for this for a long time. Can't wait to get it. Five films? Great!! Atleast it's not Criterion, or else we would be paying even more up the ass for this.

reply

Thanks to a (possible?) pricing flub at the Hastings I work at, I just picked the set up for 23.99, or 19.77 with my employee discount. Envy me, please.

reply

21.99 at Hastings. envy me, too!

reply

I just paid $21.99 for the metal cased box set at Hastings also - what a deal! Brand new, still sealed!

reply

We're the envy of the town, kids. Lucky, lucky people.

I'm a hastings employee as well and just picked it up tonight for the wonderfull price of 19.77. I'm sure they'll get around to noticing the price and jacking it up soon. Kinda like the one random MST3K box that was 14.99 for the longest time while all the others were 49.99.

reply

I just picked up the set having no idea what these films were about just seeing the word yakuza prominentlyand the phrase "from the director of Battle Royale" drew me to it. I was pleasently surprised, Street Mobster and Battles Without Honour or humanity are both excellent. It's nice to see a yakuza movie from the Japanese perspective. Street Mobster is a great gang warfare movie, with a cool "Blaxploitation" feel about it, while "Battles..." isn't just a great gang movie, it's a good period piece about post war Japan. Im going to watch Yakuza Graveyard next weekend, hopefully it will be as good as the others.

While Xmas shopping for the 2005 season I just came upon this box set and picked it up IMMEDIATELY upon reading the box without second thought, knowing nothing else about the actual films.....unlike you lucky Hastings folk I paid almost $80......however, it is now a few days later and I can say without doubt that this set is worth all that and MORE! Retains a lovely oldschool kung-fu flick feel without the standard genre trappings and maintains an excellent level of tension throughout....a must see for anyone even remotely interested in Asian film or the Yakuza, or even traditional action/mob movies for that matter. BUY THIS NOW, whatever the price.

Another lucky find at Hastings - 21.99 + tax = excellent!!

I had read about this price mistake over a year ago and finally found one.

reply

I wish I knew about price mis-labelings...Dang. I paid about $80 for the set, as well. However, I do not regret it at all! A great series.

reply

what the hell is Hastings??? lol i'm gonna have to order it on amazon if i want it cheap...

reply

It is a video store chain. http://www.hastingsentertainment.com

Sadly online it seems that they got the price right.

I just found the same boxset at Hastings for $21.99. I was not going to buy it today until I look around and saw what it retails for. It was a deal that I could not pass up.

reply

Lucky you, I've had to view them via online rental, but i do have plans to buy the set at some point. I've heard it has some really terrific packaging, hope you enjoy it.

I work at Hastings and the box set costs 21.99 still. I managed to get a used copy for 14.99, before my discount.

I'm going to email corporate and see if they're aware of the price now that I snagged a copy :D

reply

Update: The price will be fixed next update :D

Hope you got it while you could! I know I did.

Well, it's 10 years later now and I can't seem to find this box set. I looked on Amazon and a few other websites but it's nowhere to be found. I can of course buy each DVD individually but i'd prefer to get the box set. Anyone know where it can be found now, what websites might be selling it?
