Still fantastic 40 years later

Absolute genius was put into this movie. I hope everyone takes the opportunity when they have it to see this movie, because in my opinion, it was revolutionary as far as movies go, plus the scenery, the actors, the sets, and last but not least, the music to tell the story of Jesus Christ.

Isn't it just! I watched it again and found myself moved to tears of joy and sorrow. The acting, the music, the lyrics, the dancing, the costumes, the use of the landscape and the sense of destiny throughout the film all amazed me still. I would have loved to have been part of the cast making the film. I'd have settled for any part however small.

The distance is nothing. The first step is the hardest.

I'm watching this on Sundance and read your posts. I remember when this film came out, most critics panned it. They had no idea what the director was going for, I didn't either. I didn't grow to understand this until many years later. This was quite an experimental way to place a blockbuster stage play on the big screen, with a big director. To take the actors go to Jerusalem with minimal sets and fanfare, just not to "act" but to experience it, and let audiences do the same, was unique at the time.

It's always a joy to watch Ted Neely, Carl Anderson (who was an understudy to the great Ben Vereen as Judas on stage, believe it or not!), Yvonne Elliman and the whole acting troupe are the best in their roles...

It knows what scares you. It has since the very beginning.
