Jesus is not ressurected.

How could they make a film about Jesus that ends with his death.
This must be the worst film about Jesus ever were he is not ressurected.

when i first heard the soundtrack i wondered the same thing. i noticed it ended with him crying out and that was it.

when i saw the film, it left me with this eerie feeling at the end. as the person below you answered, i think that shepherd & the sheep thing is their little message to you that He lives and continues to lead His sheep [us].

But this is why i listen to this soundtrack every Good Friday.

Anyway, the film is supposed to be told from Judas' point of view AND is being put on as a little play by the kids on the bus. If you rent the DVD, the bonus materials explain a bit more about it [commentary / tim rice interview].

This film emphazises on Jesus´ message being the most important thing and not whther he´s the son of God or not. It depicts him more as a human, plus it´s told from Judas´ point of view. Having the resurrection in it would ruin it.

The point is that jesus was a man. A mortal. The film/show does not intend to say one way or the other that Jesus was or wasn't the son of God.

According to the DVD commentary the shepherd walking across the scene was accidental but they kept it in for the relevance of shepherds in the story of JC.

We don't see him perform any miracles (just hear about them like a rumor or an exaggeration of his awesomeness) and we don't hear of anything about his mother being a virgin at his birth.

The movie/musical is meant to focus on his MESSAGE not the super fancy tricks he pulled.

I'm not a Christan, but I thoroughly enjoy this movie because it makes more sense than any other Christ-focused story.

I could say so much more, but I'm just going to leave it at that.

We can't stop here. This is bat country!

I like it that you can put whatever ending onto it that you want, or believe in. Much like Jesus of Nazareth, showing the empty tomb and the Roman official saying, "Now it all begins"....

That's why he wasn't on the bus. He was on his way to America to start the Mormon religion...8)

ROFLOL. Oh, you're killing me!! That's the funniest thing I ever heard!! I saw JCSS on stage in San Francisco right after I joined the Mormon Church. It was a big disappointment because I understood as much as anyone the importance of including the resurrection in the story. That was over 30 years ago. Because of my recent obsession with Webber and Rice's "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", I thought I would give JCSS another shot by renting it through Netflix. It incorporates the worst of the 60's screaming singing style, the worst of the 60's hard rock, heavy metal music, and the worst of the 60's hippie clothing styles. I hated that stuff when I grew up in the 60's and I hate it now. I doubt if I will ever watch JCSS again. "Joseph" was written for children, "Jesus" was written for hippies in a drug-induced stupor. Big difference.

That's so wonderful that as a follower of Jesus Christ from the Mormon Church that you are following his prime commandment, Do not judge others (Luke 732), by judging people by their singing (rock and roll, but there was certainly NO HARD ROCk at all, it didn't even exist at that time, or judging a "screaming: singing style, and the "hippie" clothes that you think they were wearing) If you are busy hating people from the sixties, you should ask for counselling from and Elder or Bishop. It's not a good Mormon thing to do. I know.

I think I am taking all of this rather well.

I see where you coming from, mate. but it is interesting the no film I have seen telling the Jesus story whether Jesus is played by Jeffery Hunter or 'death himself' Max Von Sydow! NO film I've ever seen deals with the resurrection! This seems to follow tradition, though it is given a little nod with the final shot with the shepherd. Being told from Judas' point of veiw Judas at this time was dubious, as to Jesus being the Messiah. Had he still been alive for the resurrection it would've probably sent him round the bend to have seen Jesus again. and I think that is why it's omitted

reply

But there is a hint to his resurrection! Did you not see the scene with the sunset and the shepherd at the end?

I have a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!

reply

Considering that JCS was created by young people in 1970, I'm guessing that they deliberately wanted to keep Jesus' divinity ambiguous, so the show could work for both believers and non-believers. That's why the resurrection is only hinted at and no miracles are shown. The whole theme of the show is summed up in the questions Judas -- acting as a surrogate for the contemporary public --asks in the song "Jesus Christ Superstar." The show is deliberately all questions and no answers.

reply

For the worst film on Jesus, see "The Last Temptation of the Christ", in which Jesus dreams of sexing-up Mary Mag.

Did you actually see LToC? Or do you just hate it because your religious overlords told you to? Because that's not really what that movie was about.

"Jesus Christ, who are you what have you sacrificed?"
"Jesus Christ, Superstar, do you think you're who you say you are?"

This movie is simply a dramatized version of another viewpoint

a Passion Week classic, IMO

I am a strong believer in the Resurrection, and was hurt that it wasn't included. I figured that they would get too much into one specific religion, which would cause controversy and too many llegal problems.

I'm a total atheist and this is one of my favourite movie adaptations of a musical ever.

I think you miss ALOT from this movie if you're only looking from an

"OMG NEED RESURRECTION" point of view.

This movie made me like Jesus much more than any of the other bull where they show him as some divine being. Even if I did believe that Jesus was God, it's obvious the point of this movie IS NOT about his godly side.

Jesus WAS A HUMAN (along with what ever other properties people do or not not believe he housed) and that is the side of him this story promotes. There are other films and stories about his resurrection, why can't you accept just one storyline that centres around another aspect of him? You shouldn't be so frustrated JUST because the story isn't siding with your opinion.

I understand if you hated the style or the way it was pulled off but don't chew it up just because it doesn't promote Jesus as God's Son.

reply

Fadedpear, I respect what you say but just because I said I wish I could find a film which included the ressurection doesn't mean I'm frustrated or that I think this movie is bad. I like this movie whether I cotton on to the filmaker's intentions or not

reply

You are correct. This movie sucks as a story about Jesus. He doesnt not ressurect and that gives viewers incorrect message. This movie was not made by Christians nor was it made for Christians. I think its another attempt of sinful man to give his own spin the Bible.

reply

Didn't Thomas Jefferson cut all miracles and the resurrection out of the New Testament and give it ou to Congressmen? All the supernatural stuff gets in the way sometimes.

reply

Man has been spinning the Bible for centuries though.

OFFS. This movie made me love Jesus -- you really think that's what Satan wanted!?

You are seriously confused and/or nine years old. Or both.
