Was this photogaphed in 16MM?

TV, VHS, and DVD prints of this film don't look that great to me, as though the movie was actually photographed in 16MM and then "blown up" for theatrical release. The image always looks hazy and poorly defined to me. Perhaps it was a low-budget New York film? Don't get me wrong, I love the film, but wish that it looked better.
