This is certainly one of the worst westerns I've ever seen

That's I'll I've got to say. I'll try not to even think of this movie again.

i would have to disagree with you. This is one of my favorite westerns.

I'm watching this movie while browsing through IMDB. It's one of my favorite Westerns and I catch it whenever it airs. The touches of humor and the crazy theme keep it fresh. Even the English dubbing is whimsical. It is one of the best Western films. It's interesting that Leone created some of the top ten definitive Westerns.

I have to commend Leone for making this film when he did and I have to commend Henry Fonda for making this his last Western.
I think that this film is best appreciated as a pair with Leone's greatest accomplishment in the genre - my choice for best Western, ever - "Once Upon a Tme in the West".

Both of them are meditations on the passing of the Old West that never really was in the first place, and on the question of what, exactly, makes a hero.

Beauregard represents all the great Western cinema heroes and how they should go out. It's a shame John Wayne had to go out with a whimper in The Shootist. The greatest went out the worst way.
"The Shootist" is hardly "go[ing] out with a whimper" - it's exactly the coda to his life and career that Wayne wanted to make; a study of how a big man faces the inevitable and a summing-up of his career, both withing the film as Books, and of his real career as well.

"That's I'll I've got to say. I'll try not to even think of this movie again."

I can't believe you actually watched this film and can say that.

This is far and away the best spaghetti western ever made, and one of the best westerns period.

Unless you are so shallow that all the meaning went right over your head, I can't see how anybody could see this as a bad film. Even if you take it superficially, some of the sight gags and funny stunts alone are worth the trouble of sitting through it.

My real test of a good or bad film is how many times I can view it and still get something out of it. Like Pulp Fiction, which I have seen at least a dozen times. I have watched Mio nome è Nessuno at least seven times and that's certainly not the end of it.

O wholeheartedly agree! It's badly written, poorly acted and basically dull, except in a few spots. Why Fonda agreed to do this piece of crap is beyond me. Matbe the mortgage was due. Give me the Man With No Name any day of the week.

reply

I disagree! This is a very entertaining movie. I can watch this over & over & over!

I have one foot in both camps. The acting really is pretty poor in places. The first demonstration of Nobody's fast draw was such an obvious editing trick. Whenever the dirty bunch were riding into the camera, I kept wondering if the "Ride of the Valkyres" theme was a mockery. Well, a LOT of this movie is mockery and pun.

But I still love the movie. Especially the scene in the bar, when he's looking at the next glass of whiskey to drink. And the dope-slapping of the gunslinger with the "upside down guns".

I think part of the artistry of the Western genera is that there are no new plots. The storyteller always has to work with something that's been done before. So here's Sergio, working over the standard "Nobody's faster" theme, and on the one hand, he makes a joke out of the entire Western genera, while on the other hand, presents a very good case that this "nobody" is quite worthy of taking over. I mean, you gotta like the guy. He's both humble and arrogant. He's reckless and restrained. He shows wisdom beyond his years. AND in the end he doesn't kill his rival.

reply

Well I guess you didn't saw many westerns...that's all I've got to say.

I think we all have to realize that some people post on these IMDB message boards just to get attention. I don't know how many posts I've seen saying something to the effect of "Citizen Kane is a piece of crap, Glengarry Glenn Ross is idiotic, The Fight Club is dumb for this and that......" These individuals don't need a filmworks education, they need a life outside of internet troublemaking.
My final advice to people who bait like this is, if you have no knowledge in a subject, such as film critiquing, then avoid harassing the rest of us who do. When judging a film you have to first look at what the film was trying to accomplish, and then see if it did. This film was never intended to be a true-to-life, dramatic, old American West masterpiece, but a funny, entertaining yet thought-provoking look into a certain human condition, that of wanting to be the best at something, better than anyone else alive, and using your intelligence to do it. Mission accomplished with this film, as it is a masterpiece in the Western genre.

reply

Or, it could be that this is just a really dumb movie. I watch a lot of movies and can appreciate when there is a deep message or when something is meant to be pure entertainment, but this was just silly. The Keystone Cop camerawork and whiney soundtrack are as annoying as the bad acting. This is neither good, nor bad, nor ugly. Just dumb.

reply

I thought this movie was OK at first, what drew me too it on the western channel was that it seemed so much like a leone film, and really sounded like morricone music. I bought it and hve grown to really enjoy the film, but can see where you would dislike it.

reply

I have to agree with all the negative folks here. This movie is an abortion.

I guess spaghetti westerns are just like kung fu movies; you've got people who like 'em serious and people who like 'em comedic. This movie had way too many fart & pee jokes and overcranked film "zany" gunfights to possibly rank among the great Italian westerns.

reply

The magic of the movie is the soundtrack and the great moments like the first barber scene and the billiard room scene. It gives a unique personality to the characters and makes them larger then life.

If you thought the soundtrack was whiney, then I can see why you wouldnt like this movie.

reply

Can you say parody???? The whole thing is about the other westerns. Even with the music from many Sergio Leone films thrown in. Remember the grave of Sam Peckinpaw (director) Nevada Kid (Steve McQueen) All of the references to other western movies.

Don't get worked up just laugh at it all. Let your mind relax.

reply

Or it could be (actually, its a fact) that your simply dont know what a good spaghetti western is made of and therefore cant appreciate this masterpiece.

Who really cares?

reply

It has been a long time since I have seen this movie, and I only really looked it up out of nostalgia. I can't say I remember enough to comment about the movie itself, but this thread has sparked my need to comment about the chosen methods of argument.

Obviously the original poster is trolling, he may have never even actually seen the movie. That doesn't mean that everybody who speaks negatively is wrong, in fact, some of them give specific reasons for not liking the movie which are very legitimate.

Please remember, just because someone doesn't like a movie doesn't mean they're wrong or dumb or just don't get it. It may just mean they disagree with you or the movie may not have been as great as you thought it was. Personally, I loved the movie HACKERS. Do I say that anyone who doesn't like it didn't get the deep underlying symbolism or whatever? Seriously, if we get to the point of insulting the intelligence of everyone who disagrees with us and assume some form of mental superiority, we're no better than Takashi Miike fans.

MNIN is damn cool western!

reply

Obviously, I cannot say it was better than The Good, the Bad and the Ugly or Once Upon a Time in the West... But the soundtrack was gorgeous (just like any of Morricone's work), the acting was good and the screenplay was funny, but not shallow. It is a good movie, if you still think it was the worst western you have ever seen, it is because you still need to watch plenty of westerns. Or your taste is just too bad.

reply

I agree with MoP. MNiN is a great spoof of the genre. The plot is absurd and that is exactly what the movie is about: the confrontation of rationality (represented by Fonda) and absurdism (Hill). Only take a look at the message of the movie: always make sure the right person holds the barber knife! Also watch out for the word games with "nobody". If you cannot appreciate jokes like that, MNiN s***s indeed. You probably won't enjoy Monty Python either. The person who called MNiN silly was right. The movie is a product of the Ministry of Silly Walks.

reply

Are you guys really going to argue over something that's COMPLETELY OPINIONATED!?

Just like what you like, and who care if someone doesn't like the same thing. WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT. Different strokes for different folks.

For the sake of humanity, please learn to respect each other and also respect the opinions of one another, or we are all doomed to an existence of bickering, fighting, violence, and warfare. That may sound extreme, but is it so far from the truth?

You will like this movie and like it by God

^ Best answer selected. The OP is a typical "one and done" troll- post a controversial post and then disappear while others argue.

Not to my taste. The main character is pointlessly silly and ultimately, annoying. Strikes me as a Mad Magazine lampoon of other, better spaghetti westerns.

reply

This is certainly one of the worst posts I've ever seen...

The O.P is obviously just another stupid moron who is trying get a rise out of all you people. First the soundtrack should have won Ennio Morricone a fistful of awards and second every scene is either poetic, funny or action filled

It just goes to prove that some people should stick to Pee Wee Herman films, because that is all they can handle

To the O.P: "Bite me!" because I love this film!!

reply

Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder. Obviously you just don't get it. So don't ever watch it again. It's no skin off OUR Ashtabula....

reply

some people in this thread fail to realize that every single aspect of this film was parody

reply

It's a good one on many levels. Funny and yes parody of many movies. It's old so if you don't get the parodies it seems stupid. The finger in the azz is funny at the end. I assume it's to be a gun with some other inside jokes as well.

Mostly like the movie because Terrance Hill is funny, Leone is great, Fonda is great, Marricone is great, and it isn't like 95% of other movies or westerns.

reply

Do you dare go out on a limb and name a western that you consider quality? I'm guessing that you won't, or can't.

Never let your sense of morals prevent you from doing what is right.
