Sympathetic to hitler??

Although i think alec guiness was fantastic in this...I think this movie tried to show empathy to Adolph Hitler too much- which is something i just cant abide.

Just nearing the end of it now - but yes, this sounds about right. Although, Alec Guinness is giving a spectacular performance here which itself is quite mesmerizing.

You mean you can't reach beyond the brain washing and the propaganda so deeply ingrained in you to the fact that Hitler was also just a person like most everybody else, with notions, emotions and ideals just like every other human being? There have certainly been other historical people with higher body count or bloodier deeds that we celebrate as heroes today.

Thing is he is right. I remember seeing a socialist march many years ago and a few banners had pictures of Stalin on them. Now he actually killed more of his own people than Hitler killed Jews, Gypsies, Gays. He also supported, while not directly, the mass rape of Berlin - yet Stalins picture was being carried.

And before you jump on the racist/nazi bandwagon (which is what everyone sinks to when they start losing arguments) no I am not a nazi or racist....of course unless being only part Jewish makes one a nazi

i agree. Hitler didn't seem to lie and he did what he said.

Besides Stalin ... what other heroes with higher body counts or bloodier deeds than Hitler have "we" been celebrating. Please tell me who you are talking about?

The same criticisms were leveled at Der Untergang (Downfall), but I find them to be misguided criticisms. It's important to remember that Hitler and the fanatics who swore eternal allegiance to him were human beings. Because the more we depict them as demons and werewolves, the less apt we are to remind ourselves that such a thing can happen again. It's dangerous to turn people into symbols of evil, to the extent that we forget they're people. As a person, Hitler did more damage than any demon ever could. And that's what we have to remember.
