Were There Supposed To Be Subtitles when French is spoken, etc?

I watched The Hit and was not that impressed, especially because I thought there should have been subtitles for all the French dialog. I watched it on Epix and no subtitles showed up. Is that the way the movie was originally made?

Also, did I watch an edited version. It was unclear what Nick Allen's affiliation with the government was and why his former co-workers were trying to kill him along with collateral damage. Also could not figure out why he picked the old couple and what skills they could bring to the table. If they had been in prison for homicides, it would have been longer than 3 and 8 years.

The part with the the prisoner and the warden (only cited in credits) was sheer fantasy.
