Why isn’t this excellent film better known?
A heartbreaking story told with considerable subtlety and not a trace of sentimentality about three desperately lonely people in England immediately after the First World War: a widow left wealthy and two returned soldiers, a captain and a sergeant-major. While trying to cope with the traumas of bereavement and post-combat stress, they are each looking for a new way of life in the post-war world and, above all, for love.
Beautifully photographed, with a literate script and sympathetic score, the two leads, Sarah Miles and Robert Shaw, give possibly the best performances of their careers.
