1. So it was originally rated X, but then edited for an R rating. What all did they take out? And is the DVD version the R-rated version?

2. What do you suppose Michael and Carol are arguing about in the last scene?

The 'R' rating didn't really exist in the 70s. So by today's standards, Heavy Traffic is R. There is a VHS that still holds the 'X' label, but strangely, it's actually that version that's edited. Most of the raunchier scenes, like the Maybelline sequence, and the scenes involving Snowflake are drawn over, or destroyed by an extreme closeup.

As for the last scene, my interpretation is that Michael is telling Carol he likes her. She brushes him off, but he wins her over.

I'm sorry, but you are wrong. The very first rating system which began in 1969 was GMRX or Jim-Rex. G for General Audiences... M for Mature Audiences only (which meant some nudity) R for language violence and/or nudity and X for Adults Only! Later GP which was then changed to PG was added, and many years later, PG-13 and NC-17 were added.
