Was this a hit when it came out?

Just curious. I know the Catholic church were more than a little upset when this and "Jesus Christ Superstar" were made into movies and wonder if that might have hurt the movie. I bet they LOVED the fact that it got a G rating!

I just turned this on COZI TV by mistake...it wasn't in the guide and it took about a minute to google some of the words of the songs to get the title.
The singing was really good, but it was like watching Sid and Marty Krofft doing a musical.

If you look at IMDB, they spent $1.3 million in 1972 dollars on this thing..that's a lot.

I really couldn't get past how goofy the costumes and makeup were. Very hippy-like man

If you didn't see it from the beginning, the costumes and so on might not make sense. The point was "Jesus" calling his disciples, and their costumes distinguished them from every one else.
(in my opinion)

Yes, it was a hit when it came out. I was a teenager then, and we all went to see it.

WW is right; it was a hit. All the garish, bright colors -- that was the early '70s for you. I kind of miss those years...

Great movie I saw it when I was 17 at the cinema in 1973.

It only made a million and change at the box office, at least according to wiki. The fact that it's never been re-released in the cinema probably confirms that low take. I have no idea what the DVD / blue-ray sales are, tho. Maybe it's found an audience since it first came out.

According to "All For The Best: How Godspell Transferred From Stage To Screen" it cost $1.3 million and made close
to $8 million in domestic box office. And much more on video.
The stage version was a phenomenon.
