Giordano Gagged

Can't help, but notice it on the movie poster for the film. The gag is made of metal too. I guess poor Giordano wasn't allowed to speak while imprisoned. I'm just wondering if he had that gag on for most of the movie. The Inquisition must have allowed him to take it off once in awhile to eat and drink.
