The same director would refilm the legend just a few years later, as SWORD OF THE VALIANT.

I think the director tried and failed because of the budget (and other factors that make this a bad movie, but those were Weeks' own decision), so he tried again in the 1980s just to blow it again, not only because of Miles O'Keeffe, who was imposed by the producers (Weeks wanted Mark Hamill, who's no Olivier either), but also to a bad script (basically the same than in 1973, goofy humor included, plus ripping off successful movies like Excalibur and The Empire Strikes Back). Only a fun, albeit brief, Sean Connery performance makes Sword of the Valiant watchable.
