What is the meaning of the ending?

Does Lucien die in the final shot?

Was that last scene real or a dream? Did he die? Did he survive?

The director does not want to give that answer. He leaves the answer to us (the viewer) and he wants us to interpret the end of the story our own way. The ending of Christopher Nolan's Inception http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1375666/reference and Alejandro Iñárritu's Birdman http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2562232/reference are two examples.
