#248 on the greatest movies list at IMDB

Damn kids giving 10s to every superhero movie that comes to the theaters, messing up the list. Pretty soon this won't even be on it along with a lot of other genuine classics.

I don't think most people value the power of the film. They want a horror film and The Exorcist isn't a horror film in either tradition or intent. It asks and nearly answers bigger questions that go over most peoples' heads.

reply

It's almost falling out of the list, which is ridiculous.

Amazon needs to be shamed for letting such a great site become overrun by idiots and trolls who don't know or care the first thing about movies. Same thing happened to Dpreview (which it also owns). Used to be the perfect site for gearheads and photography enthusiasts. Now it has morons who never owned a camera posting there.

The IMDB is garbage now. It used to only have diehard movie buffs rating movies. Now only troll farms, studio plants, pathetic fanboys and children rate movies there. Not only are they giving tons of 10s to junk, they'll coordinate raids and mass downvote great movies with 1s so they drop down the list.

It's sad to see but inevitable. Perhaps we should try and persuade IMDB to extend their list to a top 500? Every passing decade is going to produce more classics worthy of being in a top 250, so perhaps the list simply needs to be bigger to fit more of them on it that deserve to be acknowledged. At the same time let's hope some of the ones rated too highly naturally start to drop down.

It's no longer there. I'd like the people who gave 9s and 10s to Avengers to explain to me how The Exorcist is worse.

reply

A lot of them are kids, I think, giving tens to every cool super hero movie they see. No sense of perspective.

It's finally back in the top 250. Now ranking #224.

IMDB purged a bunch of accounts or something, so many films shifted ratings over night. Good riddance. Jaws is another that has climbed back into the top 250.

I agree with the other users on the fact that IMDB has increasingly became a haven for young movie fans whom adore superhero films.

So many more ratings are given to new superhero films compared to all time classics;
The Batman (2022) - 223k ratings
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) - 513k ratings
Joker (2019) - 1.2million ratings
Avengers: Endgame (2019) - 1million ratings
Avengers: Infinity War (2018) - 992k ratings
Aquaman (2018) - 435k ratings
Wonder Woman (2017) - 630k ratings
Logan (2017) - 719k ratings

The Exorcist for comparison has 387k ratings. A 49 year old classic that was a huge box office success and is quintessential viewing for all film fans and certainly every single Horror fan on the planet. The new Batman film will positively break 500k ratings as soon as it's on Blu-Ray, Amazon Prime and the internet.

The demographics of the site are very clear. Young movie fans whom don't watch older content and prioritize superhero films.

A lot of the movies on that list are indeed overrated.
