Teresa "misanthrope" ???

One of the photos in the album Ana looked at was a picture of Teresa on which someone (presumably Fernando as he was the only one in that album) had written something about "misanthrope". While Teresa may have been a little "odd", I can't imagine anything about her matching what the dictionary says about "misanthrope".

Any ideas what in the world it means?

After reading one of your other posts about Fernando being banished, I took "misanthrope" to be a historically cultural epithet hurled by spouses during spats.

Teresa probably didn't take the banishment and demotion in status well. Divorce was rare. She likely fought hard and gave him grief. She was no longer civil. She was "inhumane".

...except "misanthrope" was written on an old photo that Ana looked at in the album, of an obviously much younger (and most likely not even married yet) Teresa. Although the exact timing is never made known, from where the photo is in the album (before some photos of a much younger Fernando still at university), there's no doubt it was before the banishment.

On the picture is written:
To my dear "misanthrope"
signed by Teresa.

Perhaps Fernando was already a "misanthrope", reclusive person before war?

...signed by Teresa...
Ah, that's the critical piece I misunderstood. I misunderstood the inscription was to Teresa (implying Teresa herself was the "misanthrope"). That's probably why my original query doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
