Definitely overhyped but also deserves all the respect.

I'm a huge Bruce Lee fan and I love this film but I do think it gets overhyped quite a bit. I mean let's face it, compared to modern, or even martial arts films 10 years after Enter the Dragon just isn't as good.

The choreography is noticeably slower and more clunky than most modern kung-fu films and the rest of it is very, very dated indeed.

Of course both of these are simply products of time passing and can't really be held against the movie itself. At the time it was innovative and superb so it's hard to really make a call on this.

I never thought Robert Clouse was any great shakes as a director either. He was probably a very competent captain of the ship but there's something a little off about his style.

I think Enter The Dragon deserves a lot of respect for paving the way for today's martial arts films but I also dislike it when people say it's the peak of the genre because it simply isn't, not to me anyway. That honour goes to King Of The Kickboxers in my personal opinion but everyone is different.

Of course the film has the bonus of the electric personality of Bruce Lee and credit where credit is due, the formula for Enter The Dragon (the tournament) has been use again and again in many formats Including Bloodsport, Mortal Kombat and Van Damme's own The Quest.

So yes, this film has earned all the respect in the world and I for one am truly thankful for the foundations it layed for the future but it's not the best martial arts film ever.

Maybe this was the crossover film from normal Chinese fare to the American markets! When I was a kid, it became all the rage with Angela Mao's, "Deep Thrust" and the 1st one I ever saw in the late 60's called "Five Fingers Of Death!" A downtown theatre here in Chicago would play them around the clock! Getting American stars in them probably expanded their market tremendously! ;-)
