Great comedy moments in film

When "old ciggarete" gets off the train and looks in what seems to be the buffet car. A no.1 just gets off while old ciggarette just stares until the woman looks up and says ... "well?"

funniest part is with the cop & turkey... when all the hobos bark and then even funnier make the cop bark. The line "I'm a man of temperance" with the cop drinking and running away as the 'Bo's crack up. The whole scene is truly hilarious.

You're right there are some suprising moments of comedy in this otherwise grim movie. Two moments that stand out in my mind are 1) the scene where they're holding the baptismal services in the river and A Number 1 seems to be the only one who notices you can see through the young girl's wet robe. That is classic Lee Marvin. And 2) the scene where Ernest Borgnine drops that pin under the train and he can hear Keith Carradine under there screaming in agony and he's laughing that devilish laugh. It's dark humor but it's funny.

I always laughed at the scene where Shack threw his hammer at Cigaret's head. I mean, that would kill someone but he was fine 10 minutes later! Wow.

reply

haha, yeah that was almost as great as the part where Lee Marvin started beating the other hobos with a live chicken.

I just love it when Ernest Borgnine discovers Charles Tyner's corpse and grumbles, "Useless bastard." Borgnine's anger and indifference to Tyner's death strikes me as quite funny in a very dark and twisted sort of way. The baptist river dunking sequence is another definite comic highlight.

My favorite funny moment is right after Cigaret gets both of them locked in the steer car by Shack. He looks down, sees A no. 1 looking up at him, and snarls, "Who you callin' a fool?!"

Admit it, guys. The humour in this film is pretty run-of-the-mill.
"Hee, hee, I pis**d myself when Shack was laughing at the guy being hit by the pin under the train.."
The 'useless bastard' remark from Shack when he sees his dead colleague is just unrealistic, a bit of over-the-top characterisation of Shack.

A No. 1 (Lee Marvin) to Simon Oakland's policeman : "Look what you've done !"
Policeman : "What I've done ?"
A No. 1 : "Now HE thinks he's a turkey !"

Frank Booth: You stay alive, baby. Do it for Van Gogh.

The "in a coffin!"

And the laughing of the men afterwards especially the guy with the bread in his mouth!

Preacher - "I will immerse you rather than have you go to the Presbyterians"
(who sprinkle when they baptize)
A#1 - "Oh save me from the Presbyterians"
Preacher - "Hallelujah brothers and sisters, hallelujah!"

Cracks me up every time (no disrespect meant to anyone's religious beliefs).
