It's always been a personal favorite, but many late60's/early to mid 70's films are often of the 'love it or hate it' kind. With a few others that fall into the 'interesting failure' mode.

I gave it a 9. I can't explain why but I love this film...

reply

Indeed. I think this is a solid 8/10, and I might upgrade when I watch it again.

reply

It is indeed an eight out of 10, more enjoyable than an average movie, not exactly amazing, but very interesting and sticks with you. I feel like this movie has no heroes and villains, only people trying to get through the day. It's as if they movie shows the good and bad of all the characters. Very very rare.

reply

It is a true slice-of-life film, which seems increasingly rare these days except for a handful of independent films.

Yes, nowadays most movies need things to be black and white, as most audiences can't or won't think or make up their own minds.

By the way, I have noticed that we consistently see/comment on the same movies. There are a few of us that seem to have seen all the same movies!

reply

I've noticed you around these boards as well! I have varied tastes in movies and music, though I tend to gravitate toward the '60s through the '80s, with particular emphasis on creative, culty works from the '70s.

I also have some pretty varied tastes as well, in both music and film. Living in NYC I get to see tons of older interesting films that few other places show. Last year I saw over 400 films in theaters, 99% of them were not new popular releases. I rarely watch movies at home, so what I see is dictated at least partially by what is showing here at any given time. I try and rate as many movies as I see, though I do miss quite a few, you can compare your list to mine:

I tend to see many kinds of movies, but I gravitate towards horror, violence and edgy subjects. I tend to rewatch classics I saw when they came out, and ones I missed the first time around, plus those movies everyone tells you that you MUST see, even though most of them aren't much better than any other movie. Many are actually much worse. I enjoy foreign, obscure, wacky and just plain old messed up.

I also like a lot of music, all different kinds, but I am much more picky when it comes to music.

Kudos to you for seeing movies in the theater. I very rarely see films in the theater these days because it's so much work and expense for relatively little reward. I have yet to see a film in the theater this year, and last year I went only twice as far as I recall – and one of those was a free screening. I used to go to local repertory houses fairly regularly, but most of those have closed. I'm on the West Coast.

Instead, I watch movies from my collection of films I've purchased at yard sales, thrift stores and record shops. I recently cleared out thousands of films – including many I've never watched and never intend to – because I just had too much "stuff" cluttering up my home.

I also frequently visit my local library, which is an excellent source for new an obscure films now that most of my local video stores have closed.

My only expectation in films is that they not bore me. CGI, bloated budgets, bad acting and inept writing tend to do that, but not always. I love films that are genuinely weird, experimental and creative as long as they have other qualities other than just being imaginative.

Mostly I spend my time listening to music, which tends to inspire me more than movies these days.

Because you showed me yours, I'll show you mine. Do these links work? I just made them public.

“Say the least” is actually what you did.

Not much of a post.
To say the least.

I felt it was more of a 5.1/10

I thought it was excellent, a huge surprise, I had heard very little of this film, but since it was on TCM I thought I'd give it a try. Very well directed, the cinematography is gorgeous and terrific performances, especially by Robert Blake as Wintergreen. Not a feel good movie by any stretch, there is plenty in this film that will no doubt make any viewer uneasy and even depressed, not the least of which is the final scene, which is simultaneously one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking I've ever seen. Special mention to the stuntmen in this film. 9/10
