Inspector Longhi

Renato Scarpa's performance as Inspector Longhi is so peculiar and disturbing. He is incredibly detached and unconcerned throughout. It is particularly chilling when John is describing the sisters to him, and he is looking out of the window and seeing two women who clearly fit the description, but he doesn't acknowledge it. Also, when Laura says that the drawing doesn't look very accurate he replies, "It doesn't matter".

I need to watch again to figure out why he behaves that way. After all, they do bring the blind sister in, so John's report obviously wasn't ignored.

And I just remembered, he was also doodling over one of the drawings of the sisters, with demonic eyes and eyebrows.

Yes, that guy seemed like a creep. Maybe he saw too much death and weirdness (e.g. the murders going on in Venice at the time) while working as an inspector which disturbed him to the point of apathy. He didn't seem to have a real connection to his fellow man and the outside world.

I read that also, about him reading the lines without being able to understand english.

They also begin the office scene with his face hidden behind a large lamp. There were so many details that made him seem quirky and off-key.

Yes! I thought he was quite suspicious. I kept thinking this would end up being some "Rosemary's Baby" type plot. The other detective I felt was also quite weird and how he was following John, like maybe he thought John knew something. I also suspected the sister weren't as benevolent as they wanted the Baxters to believe. There was the one scene where John was walking Heather (the blind sister) back to the hotel and the other sister just snatches open the door and there's no light on in the room. They always seem to be near John and Laura. The first seance made me feel as though they weren't genuine.

keep in mind that he only saw the women out the window from behind and from a distance, he had no way of knowing that it was the same women. as for the pictures accuracy not mattering, by that time they'd already questioned the two sisters and cleared up laura's presumed disappearance so it really didn't matter

I thought that the pictures didn't matter on one level because he wasn't intending to find them so much as let John lead them to them or incriminate himself.

It also looked like he had drawings of the real killer on the desk. Very freaky looking. Like it was based on eyewitness descriptions.
