It's on DVD

I purchased the 30th anniversary edition of this movie on DVD in Dec. 2007. It's a U.S.A. home video edition distributed by F.H.E. (according to the cover). I got it from [email protected], via Amazon. The print is a tiny bit washed out (it's a 30 year old neg after all), but very clean, and there's short cast bios as an extra. Unfortunately, Amazon right now (Dec.29 1130pm) only lists VHS copies. Good luck!

What most people, including myself, are waiting for is an "official" release. One that is "cleaned up", with plenty of exta's, interviews etc, etc. Similar to what they did with Spielbergs "Dual". I have had a DVD copy of DBAOTD for years now. It good to have. I bought it off of the http://www.monstersinmotion.com/catalog/ website. But it is not an official release.

reply

Del Toro is producing a remake of this, so with the renewed interest, hopefully an official release of the original be out soon.

reply

I was thinking the same. We can hope so.

Go to Criterion and ask them to work on Satyajit Ray films, a good Kwaidan rerelease.

reply

the only release i've ever seen is a japanese "double feature" DVD of "GARGOYLES" and "DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK"....its region 2 and it cost me $50....the gargoyles print is beautiful (the best i've ever seen)...but "dont be afraid" appears to be taken from a vhs source...then again,i've never seen a really great print of this movie...i hope one day someone puts it out...actually,you can still buy it at xploited cinema...heres the link... http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/dont-afraid-dark-gargoyles-double-feature-p-7624.html

reply

This remake has been in development for over 10 years now. I would not get my hopes up on seeing this movie any time soon!

reply

It comes out in 2011 with Katie Holmes playing Kim Darby's role.

reply

You people are strange. It's been on DVD since 2004. Proper DVD too, not some archive BS.

There's never been a legal release on dvd of the original print until Warner Archives last year. That that thirtieth annvy copy the OP mentions is a pirated copy of the vhs. It's the same dark muddy copy I have. Those Chinese do a great job on the packaging. you'd swear it was a real release

reply

The DVD I have from 2004 is a perfectly legal release. Your silly irrellevant racist comments about the Chinese won't change that fact. It must also be said that the picture quality of the 2004 DVD is much better than the Archive version. The 2004 DVD is not a thirtieth anniversary version or whatever you're talking about, it's a proper licenced DVD struck from the European master. It's remastered so it's not muddy and it's not as Dark as the Archive version or the old US tape. It's a PAL disc so the running time is slightly shorter.

Happy for ya. Now go away.

reply

Thanks. It's very important for me that you are happy for me. I don't see why I should go anywhere though seeing as this is a public forum.

Your mistaken. It's not on corporate released dvd anywhere except Warner Archives. If it had a legit dvd release anywhere in the world it would be available SOMEWHERE on the internet. Amazon, Amazon UK, Amazon AU. Even if Amazon was out of it, or no longer stocked it, they would still have a listing with "unavailable" in the price box. You probably got a really good bootleg transfer from the legitimate vhs release from the 1980's. What's the releasing company listed on the box? Where did you buy it? Mine from China had a professionally printed clamshell cover, menus, chapters and all shrinkwrapped, just like buying it in bestbuy. But it's still just a decent quality bootleg.

Also what's racist about saying "Those Chinese do a great job knocking them off"? or whatever the hell I said. It has nothing to do with Chinese people as a race. In case you don't read the papers much, China is the world leader in exporting pirated and knocked off merchandise, from movies to handbags to watches. Hell, their even knocking off toothpast!!

reply

Here is the DVD copy i bought a few years ago from this website. There are no bells & whistles, it's not an official release. I have no compliants, the quality is quite good. From what i'm reading about the Warner version, it is certianly much better.

Of course i would love an official release, but i'm not holding my breath. At least i have this classic of my youth ready to watch any time i wish.

Are you sure you want to be a nightclub comic?

ColonelSteveAustin: Thats the copy I have. It came frome china. Mine has a simple interactive menu with a couple pages of actor bios and two pages of chapters. All pages are set to eerie noises and wind. They did extremely professional job with the pages. The selection buttons are various cult symbles with scary screenshots as backgrounds. The movie is not a terrible transfer, a little dark and grainy because it's a video rip. But it is still not an authorised release.

reply

LOLOLOL!! I just started exploring the bio pages. Kim Darby's bio page is set to Iron Maiden's "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" song. Now there's no doubt the 30th anniv copy is a pirate.

reply

No rp69 I am not mistaken. You are. Your weird assumption that all legal DVDs show up on Amazon or somewhere on the internet is obviously just silly as are all your other assumptions. I have several legal DVDs released on region 2 which do not show up on Amazon UK, AU or Amazon.com. A large part of my collection of perfectly legal releases do not show up on any internet sites. Not all countries rely on the internet to sell DVDs.

All DVDs released in any other country than UK, AU and the US will not show up on any of the sites you mention. You should really stop being a racist biggot and stop making silly assumptions about stuff you obviously know nothing about. There's nothing more silly than a racist idiot making wrong assumptions.

Norse-Viking: What releasing company produced the dvd? What website did you buy it from? Can you post a picture of the case, or a screenshot of the main title menu page? Come-on post some pictures on fliker or some other host site. I'm calling you out. prove yourself. I bet you can't.

If it were mass produced there would be evidence of it SOMEWHERE on the net!

This forum is getting all kinds of traffic with the new remake coming out. I don't see a soul backing your claim.

reply

No there does not have to be any proof of it somewhere on the net. Are you really this stupid or is it an act? Sarcasm? There's no such thing as a soul. I don't see anyone backing up your silly claims of there being a soul. If there was such a thing as a soul I'm sure there would be evidence of it SOMEWHERE. Like I said I have numerous DVDs, mass produced legal DVDs with not a single trace of their existence on the internet. It's not that uncommon.

reply

Nobody will back-up your claim because you must have the only copy in existence. Read the rest of the posts, everybody's talking about their pirated copies.

So prove it. Pictures? Info?

reply

It's not on the net so there is no pictures or info. Why should I have to prove anything to you a racist with more preconceived notions who makes more false assumptions than anyone I've ever chatted with?

reply

YOU HAVE IT. I WANT YOUR PICTURES!! dolt. Flikerrrr

You don't HAVE to prove anything. You made a claim that can not be substantiated. The burden of proof is on YOU because YOU are the only person that has seen this item. Everybody else on the forum is talking about bootlegs or Warner Archives.

I will even give you my disposable email address to send the pictures if you don't have a fliker account.

And race has nothing to do with anything, so stop flailing your lips and prove yourself.

Alright Dude, I'm on to you. You're a troll. Going through some of your previous posts I see that you post obnoxious comments and pick fights on EVERY thread you visit. Seems your really Nordic too with that language you typed in one thread. I'm sure you're not a viking though, your probably a 12 year old boy using your mommy's computer in the basement, and have never even seen the movie.

Good-bye

reply

You really do have issues don't you. You pick a fight with me and demand all kinds of silly stuff then you lose it and get all racist on us before you turn around and call me a troll. How original of you. You clever racist nordic hating Troll you.

Are you guys done yet.

I agree to the fact there is no "official" release. Anyway....

rp69, you are lucky. Mine has a scene selection and thats it,as far as i remember, my brother borrowed it so i can't double check right now. I know it doesn't have any bio pages. I guess they "upgraded" it:)

However, like yours, the quality is just fine. I was just happy to find it!

reply

Dude, Chinese isn't even a race, it's a nationality.

Your 2004 version is clearly just a foreign bootleg, kid. Being that you're not from the U.S., it's not even remotely far-fetched that a bootleg version would be making the rounds as a rental there.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/lcswoosh/hp_o_s.jpg <--This is as legit a Harry Potter backpack as your DVD is a legit copy of DBATD.

I'd be looking for a release early/mid next year (presuming the remake gets pushed back a bit). It's a good movie, and it'd be worth getting even a not so great quality DVD of, but I'll be waiting 'til then.

reply

I have the japan import double. It is much better than the pirate copy I used to own but still quite poor even for a 70s tv movie. Gargoyles is much better quality. It is official but quite rare now.

reply

You still trolling under a different name now?

reply

[deleted]

I have the dvd from 2004 and can verify it being official. Far from perfect picture wise, but way better than the copy I was used too. Gargoyles also looks much better than the VCI dvd of the time.

reply

There's no such thing as a legal OR bootleg version because the movie never existed. Everyone who says it exisited is just involved in a huge conspiracy. Even the "remake" doesn't exist.
