OK so, why did Dixie lead them back on a different route than the one they went in on? Yes I understand that he wanted to reach civilization quicker, but he lead them up onto this treacherous mountain with everybody busting a nut to keep up with him. What was the point, if I missed something sorry.

I think reaching civilization quicker was the only point... within the story. However, from the writer's point of view, I think this was probably inserted to explain why the hike back was more dangerous than what they had counted on originally. In other words, if it weren't for the money they found, probably no one would have died. Dramatically, the money needs to make a difference in what happens.
