Were Mike Nichols and Buck Henry close friends with Roman Polanski?

Originally, this film was supposed to be directed by Polanski. But then his wife perished during the Manson Murders, and he lost interest in it. Wonder if Polanski asked of Nichols and Henry to take over this film for him, and was he close friends with them?
