Great film.

Loved every second. Especially the ending, very sad, very true to the spirit of the film.

Signature? Huh? Oh damn...

read the book and saw it in the theater when I was a kid. unbelieveable how such a film can be so forgotten

reply

Is the book good?

reply

Sorry, I read the book almost 25 yrs ago, I was only in grade 5 so I can only recall having read the book, nothing about it.

It was on the other night and I watched it. I didn't much care for the end. 1. Because it was too sad; 2. It left me wondering what was gonna happen after it ended.

Great movie, though. Very touching, too.

I think if it were remade today, they'd feel compelled to animate Fa's mouth. I liked it better that they made the dialog fit what the dolphin does naturally.

How 'bout that early Paul Sorvino and Edward Herrmann, eh? Kind of interesting to see actors of their (physical and career) stature in an early role.

i loved george c. scott's performance (as always) and how menacing young sorvino was. i also thought the film was suprisingly suspensful and was impressed with nichols directing which is up there with "catch 22" as some of his best work.

Very cute and interesting film with a sad ending.

Loved it. So sad.

Beautiful, moving film, but I could have done without some of the political intrigue, which seemed tacked on. The ending was sad but necessary, but I'm sure man and dolphin both valued their time together for the rest of their lives.

There could never be a happy ending to this story. It's a modern re-telling of 'Frankenstein', in which the Creator must ultimately turn his back on his Creation not out of hate or disgust, but out of love.

reply

The only happy ending I can think of is for all interest to have died down for anything Jake and Maggie did. They move to a place on the beach and while they are out there Fa and Be find them. They keep this a secret from everyone so Fa and Be are not hurt or hunted again.

But this could not be. The ending as is, is necessary to show the pain and damage to the animal's keepers as well as the animal when the animal is abused and/or misused by someone else. In real life animal misuse and abuse sometimes does not have a happy ending.
