who watched these movies back in the day?

If you went to a drive in or theater back in 73 and saw Coffy or any other blaxploitation flick what kind of people would you see?

Did a lot of black people go see these movies? or was it a mix of races? It seems like it is geared towards a black audience but it definitely can appeal to any race if you ask me. Would you find people on dates there or would it have just been exploitation aficionados?

I'm just curious about what kind of people saw these kind of movies back then, before they were considered classics.

Believe it or not, at the urban theaters I saw these type of films, the audience was mostly white.

Example: Eastmont Four Theater in Oakland, CA.
The Afro-Americans would see the Kung Fu Flicks, The Whites would see the Blaxploitation or horror, and the Asian crowd would see the main stream release of the week. Coffy's audience was predominately white then Afro- American and the Hispanic.

do anybody remember the Market Street cinema in San Francisco when everybody from every hood what's at the movies watching coffy and the Mack together. the audience was all African American and yes we did go see Bruce Lee movies. but when it came up to me and asked on the screen we was there supporting it from sweet Sweetback to Cooley high. so whoever said it was all Caucasians in the movie I don't know what theater they were at it sure wasn't in San Francisco. PS blaxploitation saved Hollywood and don't forget it.
