DVD Commentary

How can Rydell be so proud and repeatedly say that he 'discovered' Marsha Mason when she had a pretty big supporting part in 'Blume in Love' the year before? If anyone should take credit, it's Paul Mazursky. Her first lead role, sure, but he didn't discover her. Ego, I guess.

this is a really old thread but....
she may have filmed this before she filmed Blume in Love but the latter came out first.
I'm going to listen to the commentary tomorrow.

Blume in Love was shot first, but to his credit, Rydel hadn't seen any of its footage, as it wasn't released until his film was shooting. Still, the credit should go to Mazursky.

However, it's not like either director exactly found Mason sitting at a soda fountain with stars in her eyes. She was already an established, working stage actress who'd appeared on Broadway, Off Broadway, in a national tour, and in regional theater. She'd also had a regular role playing a newspaper reporter on the soap opera Love of Life.

What I hate about the commentary, which I'm about to switch off in boredom, is that the director somehow seems to be under the impression we haven't watched the film already.

Basically, he's just retelling us the plot as the film unspools. ("Now he goes through her refrigerator and finds that she's not much of a mother. He doesn't really like what he sees...He knows that she has a son, and how come the refrigerator isn't full?")

Uh, yeah...we can see that, Mr. Rydel. That's the story.

I'm a huge movie buff but I've never understood wanting to listen to commentary all the way thru a movie. What a bore!
