Maybe should be part of a set...

... this film and THE LAST DETAIL, which were both written by Ponicsan and deal with the darker aspects of Naval experience. I only saw DETAIL once, long ago. Anyone able to offer comparison between the two films? Also, any information on Ponicsan's personal background, since these were apparently his earliest works based on his books?

I'd buy 'em as a set!

The Last Detail is far superior.

I can see why you say that, princess. "The Last Detail" with all it's stark realism, etc. I just think a movie that dry should have a point.
The cast of "Cinderella Liberty" weren't constrained by realism. James Caan, Eli Wallach, and Marsha Mason, both entertain and engage. Mason at her most vivacious and vulnerable. Wallach chewing the scenery the way it should be chewed. And James Caan understating his bravado. The viewer's suspension of disbelief is well rewarded. A great 1970s "family film".

I enjoyed both, but The Last Detail was purely made great by the performance of Nicholson - not downplaying the rest of the cast,In Cinderella Liberty I thought Caan and Mason gave their best performances.

Being an ex-sailor I identified with Nicholson's performance - we all knew sailor's like him.
