I was just a 12-year-old kid in 1973, but I seem to recall there being a lot of controversy about the "frank sexuality" in this movie when it came out. I have a vague memory of some theater chains refusing to carry it, or the rating being changed, or something like that.

Well I'll tell you there was some business back then where the mayor of Chicago went out of his way to have safety inspections in cinemas in the area around "THE LOOP"
If the didn't pass they were shut down. WHY do you say?
Because "HE" (the Mayor) did not approve of the story line of many of the films of that era
on location with SUPERMAN I,& OTHER STARS

i saw on HBO in 1974, and I was 9 years old. My parents let me watch everything on TV. I don't think it was considered rated x back then.
