Connection to Lonely Are the Brave?

There is a 1962 movie called "Lonely Are the Brave," which is set, like "Charley Varrick," near Albequerque, New Mexico in the rural desert areas.

In that "modern-day Western", Walter Matthau plays the local sheriff searching for a fugitive cowboy jailbreaker played by Kirk Douglas.

Matthau's Deputy is played by lanky milquetoast William Schallert.

Well, 11 years later in "Charley Varrick," also set around Albequerque for the most part, the sheriff chasing Walter Matthau is played by William Schallert.

It almost feels as if in "Charley Varrick," Matthau switched sides and Schallert was promoted to sheriff!

Plus, everybody changed their names.
