If I am not mistaken .... he shoots his annoying mother, not himself.
By the way the SE dvd comes out very soon!

reply

I assumed he shot himself.....meaning that Candy would never get out of the ground....because he was the only person who KNEW she was in the ground.
But I may be wrong.

Special thanks goes to the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas.
It is their print that is used for the dvd transfer and what a magnificent job they did with the packaging.

reply

Actually, they intended to loan out their print, but the original negative was located in time and that was the final source for the DVD transfer.

But one should always give thanks for the Alamo Drafthouse, it's one of the best theatres in the nation!

reply

You have it wrong.

Remember - the kid has been trying to figure out some way to let someone know to go to the "grave".

As the kid is coming down the hill, he stops by one of dead men and he looks up at a drain pipe from which sounds can be heard. He then scoots down the hill on his butt so that he leaves a very clearly new path up the hill. When the cops arrive and look around, what do you think they are going to find.

reply

I personally think the little boy plugs his own mother at the end. Afterall, that horrible hag was beating the poor kid like a drum throughout the whole movie. He gives his abusive mom her rightful comeuppance at the end. It's the central point of the film: violence only begets violence; it's a cruel self-perpetuating chain that's passed down from one person to another. People who are victims of violence usually become victimizers at some point. At the film's end the little boy clearly kills his mom, thereby becoming yet another part of this seemingly endless cycle. I hope my reply clarifies any problems you had with the ending.

reply

You are correct. His mother is repeatedly calling his name until the gun shot, then silence. This indicates that the gun shot silenced her.

The orginal poster also stated that the little boy killed himself and no one would be able to save Candy. Well, the gunshots fired at the top of the hill would have certainly garnered attention (broad daylight). Once police arrived at the scene and found the dead bodies at the top of the hill, hopefully Candy would be discovered. The boy might alert the police or maybe, while searching the crime scene for evidence, the police might have heard Candy's cries through the drainage pipe that is running out the side of the hill (the little boy listens through it before going to shoot his mother).

reply

What I was wondering the whole time was, how could Candy breathe since Eddy apparently didn't leave the tube (you see that other guy holding it later)?

reply

She breathed through the drainage pipe.

I think the final shot says it all. Lingering on the ground where Candy is buried it implies that she'll never be found alive, if at all. Remember, the boy isn't exactly the most communicative - the telephone scene suggests that it isn't just his vocal cords that are warped. I doubt anyone would take him seriously if he could, in some way, communicate what had happened. Afterall, he's murdered his old dear and the fat gang member.

I might be wrong, but this take on the ending would certainly tie in with the nihlistic vision the rest of the movie set out. That said, the beauty of the ending is the not knowing.

reply

Side note... you may remember seeing the little boy's shrew of a mother before: she's known to millions as Myrna (MEER-na) Carter from that Brady Bunch episode where the family is chosen to do a commercial for SAFE laundry detergent.

reply

Unless I'm mistaken, Bonnie Boland (the mom) was also in "Here Come the Brides." I guess I could look it up, since I'm already here on the IMDb, after all.

Another vote for the kid (the director's son, by the way) shooting the mother: I think it's made pretty obvious with the sound of that mind-numbingly annoying cow bell hitting the ground just after the gunshot.

Perhaps I'm a little warped, but I found a lot of humor in this flick, including the last gunshot. Steve V.

PS> Whoops, guess I WAS wrong. No "Here Come the Brides" in Bonnie's resume. You can't be right in every trivia point, I guess. SV.

reply

When I first saw the mom I immediately thought of Bridget Hanley of "Here Come the Brides", but I knew it couldn't be her because I would have noticed her name in the credits.

reply

I got to go with boy shooting the mother. He finds a gun and decides to use it solve his problem and plugs his mother. You hear her yelling at him, you hear the gunshot, then nothing. The mother isn't screaming "You stupid kid, you just shot yourself" so I assume she was dead and he wasn't.

As for Candy surviving: you really don't know for sure. The gunshots will attrack police attention to area and they will look for the source of the gun and find the bodies. They will also notice the recent digging and investigate.

Candy's air supply isn't that good so she is probably in danger of dying if she doesn't get dug up soon. Will the police find her in time? We don't know...

reply

Personally, I think it was implied that Candy would die in the hole. Yeah, she could be found by police investigating the shooting. But to me, that little whimper sound just before the credits rolled was meant to remind us that no one else knew she was there.

reply

I just wonder what happens to Sean afterward.

I like to think that the bodies of the crooks were found and the police investigated the loose soil, and found Candy.

reply

The deal is;This is one of those movies where you write your own ending. It is good for discussion. Maybe the cops will think the mother is involved with the kidnappers.

reply

After all poor Candy has been through you really want to see her rescued and taken care of but, sadly, I agree that she will probably never be found. And yes, it was dear old Mom that was shot by the kid. Could not happen to a nicer lady.

reply

He defiantly shot his mom.

reply

Not sure why there's any speculation at all. His mother is calling and ringing the cowbell. The shot is heard, the mother stops calling, and you even hear the cowbell fall to the ground.
