I didnt care for the style of this film

I dont mean to offend any1, this is not a sacreligous post. But I felt that this movie is very dated. It reminded me too much of Romeo and Julie. YOu can easily tell that it was made in the early 70s.

I can respect your opinion, RewervoirDog1986. To offer my perspective... I was a teenager when this movie came out in the early 70's and the world seemed like a hate filled, cynical place. The Vietnam War was on TV at dinner every night, the president was horrible, and all people seemed to care about was money. This movie seemed to take that materialism, hate and cynicism and answer it with insights drawn from St. Francis that were fresh, relevant, and even revolutionary. So looking at it thru the eyes of a person in 2007, maybe you see a dated/hokey style. But at the time I first saw it, thru my eyes, what I saw was amazing.

true, I wasnt alive in that era, so I cant say what it was like. But in the late 60s/ early 70s the world was in a pile of sh*t. Even though we can agree that we are in deepers sh*it now (terrorism, 9/11, North Korea, etc.) I suppose that the ideas of coming together are more vibrant now than in 1972.

reply

I totally agree. I appreciate your post.

reply

I agree with both of you. I was born in 1956 too :-) I had never heard of this film, but a wise professor in college recommended it to me in 1977. But in those days you had to hope to find it on tv. I don't remember when I first rented it on video, but I fell in love with it. It totally captured that bizarre early 70's schizophrenia we were living in.... war, riots, pessimism, balanced with a seemingly simplistic yearning for peace and love. Somehow the world survived, but I'm not sure what we've become.

you summed it up: pessimism versus yearning for something better... thanks bearmauled...

I just watched it this week-end. It was a fun watch, but there were two things that I disliked: one is that it was too 70's. "Brother sun, sister moon"? I mean, come on! They nearly turned Francis into a hippy fer cryin' out loud! The second thing I disliked was how Frcis was portrayed. When came away with the vague idea that his close encounter with death left him with some bats in the belfrey. I had to tell the people I watched this with that he was not crazy in any way (they came away thinking that he must have been goofey); do you send a crazy man amdist Muslims to try to convert them?

reply

No --- but the experience might drive him that way.

The song is a loose paraphrase of Francis' Canticle of the Sun, in which he does refer to "frate sole" and "sora luna".

"The song is a loose paraphrase of Francis' Canticle of the Sun"

and can't they? It is absolutely right to paraphrase such works especially if the person lived centuries ago and it is quite difficult to introduce him to modern people. The film is the interpretation. Of course, THE CANTICLE OF THE SUN is addressed to God, BROTHER SUN SISTER MOON is addressed to creatures of God but that is where Francis saw the sublime spirit: "I feel His love awakening my heart..."

Greetings and thanks for opinion share. It's precious to discuss such themes.

I wasn't attacking them for paraphrasing, I was just pointing out to the previous poster that the phrase wasn't plucked out of the air.

I just recently read St. Francis' prayer and have seen where the "brother sun sister moon" phrase comes from. My apologies, then.
I saw "Claire and Francis" this week on TV and liked it a bit more than this movie. I think it was a bit more faithful to St. Francis' story.

Is this movie dated? Perhaps, but that's not necessarily something bad. 'Gone with the Wind' is way dated and still is considered a great movie by most people. Why? Not only because it tells a compelling story, melodramatic and all, but also because it's a glimpse into a long gone era. I am talking about the so called "golden age" of Hollywood. GWTW represents better than any other movie that period and place of cinema history, including both its excesses and its virtues. So is 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon'. OK the movie is not nearly as good as GWTW, nevertheless it also represents certain kind of movies that are no longer made, plus it represents the dreams and aspirations of a generation, the "flower-power" generation. When a bunch of well intentioned dreamers thought the world could be changed for the better. It was not the case, today we are worse than back in the 70's.
Yes, the movie is dated, is a product of its time, you should understand it as that. Finally don't you prefer a movie with such beautiful and profound message (if naïve) on how christianism should be understood? (as a message of love and respect both for nature and human beings. A message of peace and dignity) instead of movies like 'The Passion of Christ' that preaches the opposite?
Just asking.

I think there's a good movie to be made on the life of Francis of Assisi. This movie wasn't it.
