In what way was he disrespectful? It was meant to convey that he had been chosen by God to deliver this message to the Pope, and the Pope understood it.

I agree with you. I didn't like the film but I didn't think he was being disrespectful to the pontiff. On the contrary, I thought he showed him a lot of respect.
