What kind of gun does he use?

Does anybody know what kind of gun Tommy uses? It certainly ain't like any kind I've seen before.

I may be incorrect on the actual model, but it appears to be a "Broomhandle" Mauser (I believe the model number is the C96, but I could have that wrong). It was an early automatic pistol. I was also wondering what type of gun the first hit man is using. Both are really odd choices for a killer's gun when more common and more powerful choices (the Colt .45, for instance) would be available.

It might be a Mauser, but I don't think it's a C96; the C96 is blockier-looking than the gun Tommy is holding on the cover of the DVD (in the part in front of the trigger). The gun in the cover photo looks like it says "P68" on it, but it's kind of hard to read. My first thought was a Luger, but it could certainly also be a Mauser.

Also, FYI, all of these guns are SEMI-automatic pistols. An automatic pistol would be one where you just pull the trigger once and get a spray of bullets like a machine gun.

And it's my (non-expert) understanding that hitmen tend to favor small-caliber handguns over a big beast like a .45 -- they're smaller, cheaper, reliable, and less messy when used at the close ranges favored for a hit.

I haven't seen the DVD cover so I don't know what kind of gun Williamson is holding in that photo, so I can't comment on that. The small picture in the corner of the IMDB page for this movie shows Williamson with what looks vaguely like a Walther P-38, but I don't recall him using a gun that looked anything like that in the film. I've seen the movie and the gun Williamson uses on the fellow in the barber shop and the mafia accountants appears to be a C96 or one of its variants (maybe, though unlikely, the Chinese version). The distinctive handgrip and box magazine before the trigger guard appear Broom Mauser. In the film's publicity stills, Larry Cohen is holding (James Bond-style)what appears to be a Broom.

If you're referring to the classic P-08 Luger, it has no box magazine before the trigger guard. The P-08's grip (and the gun in general), knee-joint action, and curvy contours also look nothing like the gun Williamson is using in the film. I haven't fired a Broom, but I have handled a P-08, so I'd recognize the Luger.

You're correct on the nomenclature, but the term "automatic" is a casually accepted designation for an autoloading pistol.

isn't that the gun that was modified and turned into han solo's "blaster" in star wars?

"Rampart: Squad 51."

I think I've read that. It's a very unusual looking firearm. I've been puzzling on what weapon the first hitman is using. I found a very close-looking relative, an early Deutsch or French automatic. I think the filmmakers chose some unusual pistols at any rate. Regards, BTF.

Here's the Internet Movie Firearms Database for Black Caesar showing screenshots from the movie of the Mauser C96 "Red 9" and other guns.
