The Rape

I lost interest after he rapes his "girlfriend" like it's nothing and then she stays around for some uncomprehensible reason. What a POS.

reply

Is the POS him or his girlfriend? I don't think either one can be held up as an example of valor.

reply

not much different from real life where a girl gets beat by her boyfriend and stays with him >cough< Rihanna >cough<

That was an appallingly casual depiction of rape. At first, I thought that it was going to be a turning point in the film in which Tommy Gibbs became an unrepentant villain. But then the scene immediately following was one in which we were supposed to empathize with him.

It was treated as just a straight power fantasy. He said that he had no qualms with raping her, even using the word itself to describe the incident, and forced himself on her while she struggled in vain to fight back. And the camera made sure to linger on her breast as it happened. In her next scene, he was cocky and she was mad - like as if he'd just made a joke about her butt being too big. That was it. It was never brought up again and had no consequences.

High Plains Drifter, a Clint Eastwood film released the same year as Black Caesar, was guilty of the same thing. Before that, James Bond did it in Goldfinger. I still like the movie, but that's one scene that I think they should have left out.

Oh c'mon! It was 1973! Aren't you familiar with grindhouse/exploitation flicks from this era? I'm not talking about the Tarantino crap either, because that stuff is watered down junk and just plain FAKE. And his girl does not stick around. she hated Tommy..which is why he had to force the sex in the first place. In fact she winds up getting some serious revenge on him later on. If you are gonna call this film a "POS" then you have no business watching this genre of film. "Black Caesar" is one of the best examples of the genre; it is a masterpiece. Stick to the watered down, politically correct garbage because this stuff is over your head.

Well said. Too many PC-liberals, hypocrites and feminists on this board.

reply

I know! I have to wonder what they are even doing on this board. Maybe they just enjoy criticizing anyone who does not share their narrow, judgemental mindset..

They are losers in real life. Their life sucks, their job sucks, their relationships probably suck too, so they use the protection of anonymity to hurl judgment at others (this is how they achieve their catharsis). I have found the best solution is not to feed these people: if you do they will bring you down too. They are simply looking for some attention (they don't get any in real life) and someone vulnerable enough to get hurt by them (they're weak and probably get hurt a lot in real life so it is their way of getting back at people). They get sadistic pleasure through their acts. The best way to teach them a lesson is to ignore them (that is sometimes hard to do) and show them the middle finger.

My 2 cents. :)

I think you're imagining people here who aren't really in this topic. I don't think you have to be a "PC-liberal" to have a negative opinion of rape.

reply

Besides, the problem isn't that the movie depicted an act of rape. The problem is that it was played for fantasy and by a character whom the audience is supposed to support. The murders, the gangster stuff, that's pure escapism. Rape isn't something that should be treated as escapist fun.

If that makes me a liberal, I would still consider it less of an insult than to be someone who condones cinematic rape fantasies.

reply

Okay, all I can say to that is, if you are in any way offended by things like rape scenes for entertainment, then you have no business watching 70's grindhouse/exploitation cinema. Because the whole genre is based on this kind of material. So why watch it if you are offended by it? Stick to those Tarantino films; they are politically correct, FAKE grindhouse movies that are geared towards the modern, PC audience who needs their entertainment clean and "rape free.." Think about it. You are offended by on screen rape in films....and yet you are watching a movie like "Black Caesar." Why? WHY??

You seem like a pleasant person.

reply

I AM a "pleasant person.." I'm also a fan of cult movies, and passionate about the subject. Maybe we can get together sometime and watch some rape films :)

It's a board where people offer different opinions on film and television, not a dictatorship with you as dictator. Guess you can't pull any chicks in real life.

If he was all that he could have found another woman. He raped her cuz he was an a-hole.

So everybody was rapin' in the '70s ... I bet you argue when Cosby did it it was consensual though. GTFOOH

In general the women were portrayed as way too weak. She's more into him than she is her, but he rapes her and later beats her up? The other dude's wife stands there afraid when the whote cop is manhandling her baby? Like, what? Guess a short afro didn't make you bad after all.
