No oscar nods for Bob De Niro?

How come?

This was a B-movie when it came out, but surprised everyone by the stellar reviews that DeNiro got. I remember the large ads in the paper for it in Dallas, listing all the raves he got across the country. But besides DeNiro, it is nonetheless a B-quality movie. Even Mark Harris' screenplay could have been much better, and he wrote the book to begin with.

I couldn't disagree more. I think the script was excellent, and the performances were good to great all around. DeNiro was great. But Michael Moriarty was even better. His voice and facial expressions were perfect. And vincent Gardenia was, as usual, great.

This is just one of those movies that is unseen and/or unappreciated by the masses. Maybe it's the combination of prose dialogue, somber theme, and complete lack of sex and violence. But for my money, it is one of the best movies ever.

The Sting won the Oscar for best movie for 1973. I like The Sting and consider it a very good movie. But if I had been one of the judges, Bang the Drum Slowly would have been an easy choice for me.

Thank God we have Ridley Scott to tell us what to think!

Well said, and you wrote it so well. I agree that sometimes these "|little" movies are the ones we remember. No one has ever heard of My first Mister, but that is one of my altime favs.

I essentially agree with you, especially in regards to Michael Moriarty. I have not seen the film since 1973 yet what remains most in my memory is his performance. I have always felt it was essentially his film in terms of who was a stand-out. DeNiro was very good, and this was my introduction to him.

"The Sting" is one the best films ever made and better than "Bang the Drum Slowly" if I must make comparisons. But they are different types of film and both excellent in comparison to other films in their respective genres. It is a testament to the power of ?Bang the Drum Slowly" that I remember so much of it after more than 40 years.

I do not agree that this is a "B-quality movie" as it was in fact a major release at the time with good production values. It simply used the budget that was necessary. I was a projectionist in a theater that showed this and it was fairly well-received.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

His co-star Vincent Gardenia got the oscar nomination instead of De Niro.

But DeNiro got the Oscar the next year.

As young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II.

Wow. Could there be a greater contrast in characters than that between Vito Corleone and Bruce Pearson?

I guess that's what you call range, huh?

Vincent Gardenia won the Oscar in 1973 for his role in Bang the Drum Slowly.

It's a great movie.

Vincent Gardenia didn't win the Oscar.
It's an honor just to be nominated.

I see the OP posted this back when she was still crazy for Bobby D. I wonder if she still feels the same about his performance here?

At any rate, while I get the praise for Michael Moriarty's performance, if anyone deserved a nomination for this film, it's De Niro. He gave a stupendous performance that really showed his incredible range.

Having said that, I think his scene-stealing performance as Johnny Boy in Mean Streets was even more worthy of a nomination that year.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!
