How is this masterpiece only rated 5.9?

According to the voter demographic it seems to be getting hit mostly by guys. Obviously the fact that it is satirising the feminist movement of the early 70s seems to have gone completely over their heads. This is a wildly inventive and subversive psychological thriller and deserves a far better rating, since at the moment Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and Transformers 3 are superior movies according to the IMDB score!! This movie deserves a 7 at least.

While the other movies you listed suck, it doesn't mean this turd should be rated higher, it means those should have the 1-2that they deserve.
This movie really sucked though, but I thank TCM for showing this old trash. I've seen more movies that I haven't seen in 40+ years due to their Underground programming.

Both "The Baby" and "Star Wars" are torturous to sit through.

lol. I agree!

I've just watched this again for probably the fifth time, and I think it's a solid 8/10. This is a delightfully loopy mix of black comedy, mystery, horror and melodrama, with a surprisingly feel-good twist at the end.

Interestingly, the IMDb staff rates it the highest of all the blocs here: 8/10 also.

I think the movie being too weird is giving it an unfair rating.

The more I watch it the more genius it becomes, there's a lot of messages in this movie about child abuse and other things.

I think this movie is over a lot of people's heads, I clearly get the message of the movie and it no longer seems as weird to me as it did when I first started watching it.

I would say its about a 8/10 also, there's not too many movies out there that's this damn original.

Most of those movies you mentioned are overrated rehash garbage. I'm a male myself and I think most of the ratings on IMDB are a bit biased especially when it comes to female-driven movies. A good percentage of these type of women movement movies are rated lower than they should be.

some people think, just because something is satirizing something that it makes a movie good. the movie doesn't work as a comedy or a horror movie and it's not even as weird as people on here make it out. It's less a satire then an exploitation film and badly made one at that.

In the hands of say, Brian DePalma it could have been good.

reply

People usually use "satire" as a reason to rebuff criticisms because usually the person doing the criticising has taken the story/film too literally and are levelling criticisms that don't actually apply. It's not made as a comedy or a horror film so it is wrong to judge it on those terms. It is not really an exploitation film either, it is just made within the confines of that genre. It is clearly a satire because it is barmy and far-fetched and is obviously sending up the feminist movment of the time, and within that scope it is horrifying and hilarious to varying degrees.

reply

Or you're just pretentious. I'm going to go with that.

reply

Or I am simply capable of thinking for myself, and unlike you don't need someone else to validate my own opinions.

reply

People don't post on message boards about how others should give more votes to a film if they don't need at least a little validation of their opinions. However, that is beside the point....

reply

Except I am not telling people how to vote, I asked why it is rated as low as it is i.e. I am wondering if people have overlooked the point of the film. It's my opinion, after all, no? Has there never been a film that you think should be rated higher than it is? To look it another way, two-thirds of all voters believe it should be rated higher than 5.9 so my opinion that 5.9 is too low is the majority opinion for people who have watched this film. Are two-thirds of all voters "pretentious"?

I think everyone who has read this discussion would probably like to know how exactly my belief that the film should be rated higher and my take on it being a satire is "pretentious"? Would you care to expand on your reasons? If you had agreed with my opinion would it still then be "pretentious", or is it pretentious merely by virtue that it contradicts yours?

reply

^ this. This is exactly how I feel. Thank you, harbor.

Also: just because a film is weird doesn't mean it has some kind of deeper meaning or an attempt to bring awareness to an issue. Someone mentioned a message about child abuse. What is message might that be? That you shouldn't keep your adult son as a grown baby? If you weren't aware of that before watching the film, something is wrong.
