Hey!
4 people so far in response! Sounds like wherever we all were, we were watching - Baby - t the same time!
Yes, it started with "It's Alive", which was weird. I remember that title and re-release as a kid in 1977, the title had many kids so wound up most didn't make it to the theater!
But, .... Baby!!! Even more Wrong! Allbad! Especially after the Social Worker turns the tables and already has another Baby, her husband in diapers at her home! And I think she had a tripped out Mom?
The person who made first response, you saw this in 1973? At the movies? Wow ... I would love to hear your 3 dimensional stories of that year, my Uncle graduated high school in May, 1973 & said everyone was praying Nixon was gonna end the draft, Vietnam was still jumping off and had an Ominous undercurrent going on amongst draft eligible high school grads ...
The draft was called off end of June and he told me they were all ready to go, and I believe him but they still were relieved. In place of the draft, movies like - Baby - came out! What a seemingly good psychedelic high of the mythologized 60's summer of Love ... Ending up grim and disturbed by early 1970's!
Really does sometimes matter certain times when we come and go because as a 6 year old kid when - Baby - came out, all I was hearing was Karen Carpenter, The Jackson 5 & The Osmond's singing 'One bad apple, don't spoil the whole bunch girl ...' Whew! Close call!
And the comment the Momma of Baby? There where ladies like that in the 70's! They were cool with me as a kid but they were the kind of Women who would punch back and beat the you know what out of the occasional husband who got drunk and pushed his Wife around!
There are certain things from the 1970's meant not to be re-made. The love song 'Always & Forever' by Heatwave, leave it alone! The Bee Gees 'How deep is your love', don't touch it! Anything by Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Sabbath, ELO & EWF, most of the early Eagles mellow jams ...
Baby ain't just a movie, it is a snapshot that can take a film lover back in time. One can get there thru these films and then trip off of whatever, the crime dramas, the comedies, Romance, etc.
That must sound crazy but they nailed it modern to that moment, the social worker, her style of dress and she is fine! As in really pretty and cool.
The super strange sisters of Baby, again, cattle prodder?!!! WTF?!!! then his sister jumping into the crib?!!! It certainly is not politically correct
That ending scene tho', Baby has a playmate! After the 2 cool ladies finish off Momma and her daughters, one of them is in the shallow grave faking rigor mortis!
And battle of Ladies ends when she gags Momma! Then bury the whole lot. Next day go swimming?!! And the classic freeze frame ending picture of Baby, Husband Baby and Social worker laughing and happy?!!
That was a good ending ... And still it feels horrible to admit this! I am still shocked! But especially happy his film put a full on campy vibe on everyone and you all were nice to respond to my post!
Rock on everybody!
