Crystals?

What were the blue crystals which were used in the lamps? Or what were they claimed to be?

And what was the point of Giles replacing them with white ones near the end of the film? He didn't let Hugo look in the lamp to check anyway and if Hugo had looked in the lamp it would be plain to see they were white! It just seemed like a pointless step to take.

The point was to sabotage the experiment.

They were blue quartz crystals they made a type of laser. The clear/white quartz crystals would produce a beam but it would be the wrong type of beam. If he had just taken out the crystals maybe no beam would project and his sabotage would be instantly discovered.
