Watching this film last night, I noticed that in the scene where Alvin is watching the news on TV, he is seen to be watching a colour TV.

Alvin Purple was released on December 20, 1973.

Colour television commenced in Australia on March 1, 1975.

Just thought I'd point it out.

Yep, i remember march 1 1975. My parents bought an AWA colour TV set and we watched the wizaed of of that night. I remember a Mazda ad being the first thing i saw on tv in colour. <my dad worked as a salesman for mazda at that time>

Answer to that one is People had colour tv sets for quite a few years and watched tv series in colour but not local programs eg. News, current affairs etc. Live tv came to colour in 1975 but american programs were already in colour and broadcast in colour. I remember as well because i used to love watching tv at my grandmothers place as she had the only one in our family. She got her colour tv in 1973. It was a Rank Arena tv.

reply

Ah yes, the Rank Arena. There was a joke in Sydney in the 1970s that Ron Casey of Channel 9 could not advertise Rank Arena because of his Elmer Fudd lisp.

We lived in Artarmon near the ABC TV HQ and transmission tower at Gore Hill and TCN9 studios and tower at Willoughby. We had one of the first National (now Panasonic) 21" colour tvs and were receiving their test broadcasts for at least 12-18 months before the official switch over. Lots on BBC colour programmes on the ABC and US programmes on Nine, mostly overnight when the official schedules were closed down for the night. Most of the time it was 1 or 2 shows at a time then the test pattern would resume.
