It was part of a grand tradition of providing characters to act from the audience viewpoint, going back to characters like Dr. Watson. They exist to ask the audience's questions and, allegedly, give them someone with whom to identify. problem is, kids prefer the heroes, so who wants to be Wendy and Marvin? The Wonder Twins at least had super powers, even if they were never used effectively. The same reasoning was used for sidekicks in comic books and few kids wanted to be Robin or Bucky, let alone Dusty, the Boy Detective!

Personally, I always found the Wonder Twins to be more annoying. At least Wendy and Marvin actually accomplished things. Zan and Jayna usually had to be rescued by the Super Friends, in the big stories. Their own cartoons were usually bland morality tales. At least Wendy and Marvin were used in stories that were both educational and clever, more often than not.

Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!
