When Saturday's ruled !!

When I was a kid in the 70's, I couldn't wait till Saturday morning to watch Superfriends ! This was the best cartoon for years IMO . It was cheesy just like Land of the Lost and the rest of the Kroft Super Stars shows. It was entertaining and a great time to be a kid. Saturday mornings suck these days !! But I am jealous that kids today got cartoon network .

I'll take Saturday morning tv over Cartoon Network. For one thing, the amount of great content has declined and their lineups got kind of repetitive. In the 70s, you got like 6 or 7 hours of great programming, on three networks. yeah, they reran the shows; but, you could always switch to the other network and sample what they had. Plus, you had a lot of variety, with adventure cartoons, humor cartoons, live action shows, new cartoon showcases (ABC Saturday Superstar Movie), films (CBS Children's Film Festival), and Schoolhouse Rock. To me, the only downside was the network restrictions, in response to the ACT, pretty much killing the adventure shows, apart from the Super Friends. This first season of the Super Friends was pretty creative, using environmental concerns and natural disasters to give the heroes something to do, without violence and while fulfilling the educational mandate. However, it got pretty boring, which is why I welcomed Challenge of the Super Friends, with the Legion of Doom. Finally, you got a version that was a bit closer to the comics, even if they couldn't hit each other (or even touch each other, really).

Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!

Yeah, it's kind of depressing to look at the network schedules for Saturday mornings these days, and see nary a cartoon in sight. I get that they're still available, and have just moved over to dedicated cartoon networks on cable, but still....

Saturday morning was an event when I was a kid in the '70s, and I and everybody else I knew got up early, poured ourselves a great big bowl of sugary cereal, and sat down to enjoy the cartoons (and a few live action shows like Shazam or Land of the Lost) until noon. My favorite show was the Bugs Bunny Road Runner Show, but I did enjoy Super Friends.

That said... I viewed an episode not too long ago, and found it nigh unwatchable now, as an adult. It stands in stark contrast to the more recent Justice League and Justice League Unlimited shows. Those are simply better written, and the episodes are enjoyable by adults as well as children. Super Friends, like a lot of cartoons of its era, is more solidly oriented toward a juvenile audience only.

But they were great viewing back then.
