We need Starlost on DVD!

I'd love to see The Starlost on dvd. There are some extras out there like that promotional video made with Keir Dullea that would make great extras. Some of the Starlost episode stories are as good as the original Star Trek. Sure, the production values were poor, even for the era, but there is some good stuff here, and some great nostalgia. We need a complete series release!!

reply

Recently, I've seen indications that there may be a 3 disc DVD out there for The Starlost but have been unable to track it down or even get more information. There may be hope!

reply

I second that motion! All in favor, say "Aye."

Would realy be nice to have in my collection.

I've been trying to find this show for years (didn't remember the name -- I was a little kid). Thought it was British (production value, as I recall, was very Dr. Who--like, maybe even early video). If it's ever released, I'd be all over it. Thanks to TVshowsonDVD.com for at least helping me find the name of the series!

reply

I have several episodes on VHS tape. Good to see them again, after so many years. This was my favorite show when I was a kid (this showed up between Star Trek and Space 1999), even if the production values were so cheap.

As to DVD availability, see the attached link. Someone is offering StarLost on 3 DVDs for $20.00+.

I'd be tempted to get this set - just wondering if this offer is legit, and the quality of the DVDs.

AAAWWWWW ! Ya had me all excited there ! I thought it was the full series...but it's not....it's the reworked series that was released in 1980(?) as 5 films for cable TV ! It doesn't include the whole series....awwww..buggeration !

I found this site as a sponsored link on google
http://www.warlockvideos.com/Starlost.html

$17 and it says it has the complete tv series.

I haven't tried the site before but might be good - they have a number of other show available too. Six million dollar man - enough said :)

reply

Those are cheap home made copies. Get the real thing at http://www.xploitedcinema.com. They also have the real Six Million Dollar Man DVDs. You need a Region 2 DVD player but those are very easy to find now and just as inexpensive as standard North American decks.

reply

For those of us who can handle having homemade copies if they play on Region 0, how's the quality of the Wrlock Videos stuff?

Are they at least close enough to a decent videotape?

No, no - Pillage first, then burn! Stupid Vikings...

Quick comment about the show. I loved it as a kid. I am very nostalgic so if I see it again I'll be happy. People gripe about the quality of the acting and special effects, etc. I believe they did a damn good job with what they were had to scrape together, it got my imagination flowing. It's too bad the creator was mistreated like he was. I think "A Phoenix Without Ashes" would be an awesome book to adapt to the big screen.

Now back to the topic. I just ordered a 3 DVD/region 0 set from a company on the internet. It says "Star Lost the complete series" on it. I am eagerly awaiting the delivery to find out about the quality of discs. as long as the first episode is close to pristene I will be happy. I only remember about 6 or 7 of the episodes and I saw them several times as I recall.
Here is their disclaimer.. "Before ordering, please be aware that the DVD's we sell are NOT commercially-produced recordings. These films and Television Programs are not currently available on commercial DVD in the United States or Canada and are believed to be in public domain. And if we are wrong and you are officially involved with a title, and wish it removed from our site, again please send a cease and desist notification--with credentials, of course, along with the information necessary to contact you to the e-mail address listed... Warlock Video" They also listed Logan's Run the Complete Series among others, too.

For those that are interested I am posting the series to Youtube, all 18 episodes as well as a salvaged copy of a Keir Dullea/Douglas Trumbull promo made prior to production (in very bad condition). I had to rework some from the 80's movies but all will be intact stories broken into 5 segments for Youtube time constraints.

As of this date I have uploaded:

1. Voyage of Discovery
2. Lazerius from the Mist
3. The Goddess Calabra
4. The Pisces

More to come....

Very cool! Maybe it's my internet connection, but at least one episode (#1) is jerky, like the sampling rate is too slow. Others are just like TV broadcast. Definitely good for a Starlost fix!

I've seen this series crucified in articles for years but it really was surprisingly well produced and interesting thoughout. It's a forgoten milestone in Canadian tv. If memory serves, when aired on local stations in markets like New York as filer, it rated surprisingly well. I'd buy a box set in a heartbeat.

reply

VCI has announced (February 2008) a Region 1 DVD set but since they were the ones who made the VHS box set with the five feature length edits my suspicion is that's what we'll see, which is already currently available on a PAL DVD set from England. We need ALL sixteen episodes in their original broadcast forms but whatever. No date is announced for the release but at least this will give North American fans who don't have PAL DVD players some hope.

reply

Yeah, I don't have my hopes raised either. I have the 5 telefilms as officially released on videocassette some years back. I also bought TV copies on DVD-R of episodes taped from CTV many years ago. So, I guess I've got all there is to be had at the moment. Those same telefilms were released on DVD in the UK.

We really do need the whole series on DVD. It would be gracious of someone to give us a few extras as well, like the promotional film that Dullea made prior to the series' run. It is available on the internet, but it would be nice to see it properly preserved on an official release. The show is not as bad as Cordwainer Bird (writer Harlan Ellison) would have us believe. There are a few decent science fiction stories in the mix, and the odd enjoyable cameo for SF fans, e.g. Walter Koenig of Star Trek, Barry Morse of Space: 1999, John Colicos of Battlestar Galactica.

reply

Well, it looks like we got our wish. The Region 1 edition of the complete series will be out soon, and the bonus feature will include the promotional featurette with Keir Dullea! Wonderful. Now I can throw out my TV-broadcast copies with the poor sound and old commercials! Can't wait. I'll still keep my videocassette set of the pieced-together telefilms that circulated since the 1980s.

reply

Agreed. We need the complete series, not the telefilms. Someone said that they company doesn't understand the nostalgia market well. I think that's true. Those who appreciate this series appreciate the whole thing, not just edited selections. Those who don't know the difference won't care or know. So, just give us the series and keep everyone satisfied!

I have the telefilms on VHS. Nice to have an official release. But I also have copies of the whole as recorded from TV in the early 1980s. I had to pay for those online, but my choices were poor. I will gladly buy official releases to disc of the complete series, and I'd love to have the promotional film that Keir Dullea and Douglas Trumball did as a bonus feature!

reply

I should actually take a little credit for some of this. I tracked down contact info for VCI many years ago, and pestered them regularly about coming out with Starlost. It seems to have done at least SOME good.

reply

The production values were on par with the BBCs "Dr Who" series that was made in the 1970's, video shot, poor "special effects" etc.

Some of the episode stories were good, but lousy production values, and a lack of direction from the production staff can get in the way of things.

A pity that it can't be done again today.

BTY, if you check out the promotional video, you'll notice that the background music was from Silent Running, which Dykstra also did.

Watching mine right now -- they are indeed the original unedited episodes, though people who may have gotten the PAL box set with the telefilms versions might want to hang onto that too, there's a subtle difference to how the show is presented. You should also make a point to grab a set NOW while Amazon still has it for $24.95 US.

reply

I have it too.. and it does have a different feel than the films.

reply

Amazon is back up to $44.95, but deepdiscount.com has the complete series for $27.87 with free shipping. I got my set for Christmas and have been enjoying the heck out of it for the last few days.
