TAS is why I became a fan

I was too young to see TOS and it was not in syndication in my area. I was, however, just the right age to enjoy TAS. I was hooked and sought out the books, comics, toys, etc. My introduction to Star Trek came from those sources.

It was only years later that I finally saw TOS when a local TV station started airing the episodes. At that point, I had read most of the James Blish adaptions so I knew the stories already.

Did anyone else have this experience?

I did, sort of. I was also too young to catch TOS and I saw the animated show first during its original network TV run. I didn't see TOS until a couple of years later and then I was hopelessly hooked. During the original run of TOS, we didn't get a local NBC station here until 1968, just in time to air TOS third season. I do seem to remember a couple of reruns in the late '60s, JOURNEY TO BABEL (the banquet scene with Sarek) and THE NAKED TIME (Sulu sticks his thumb on the end of his sword!) I was about 3 or 4 then.

I was a fan of the original live-action series as a boy, and then I became a bigger fan of TAS and thought it was so unique. I don't consider myself a 'Trekkie' due to the fact that I haven't seen TOS for many, many years and I don't pay any mind to the feature films or the other live-action series of the franchise. But, it is with TAS that I can re-live my enjoyment of the series and as a 'cartoon' adventure it is surprisingly very appealing to adults as well as children.

I agree that TAS can be an appealing show to adults. The only thing is that the format causes the episodes to be too short. That's the bad part. Like the Tribble episode. They barely got started and then its over.

What I like about TAS is that as if it wasn't made for children. If the series wasn't cancelled, the ones on TAS would have been those live-action eps.

Yes!

I just went out and bought the DVD's last week and am happily reliving childhood memories. I hadn't seen most of these since they were originally run ( or re-run as the case may have been)

The memory of the (overused) music cues alone remind me that I knew these shows as Star Trek, I doubt my mind separated the animated series from the live action ones... What's more I got the *aha* of recognition as I watched the episodes... I really had confused some of these-- like the 'practical joker'-- with live action episodes in my memory. I was 7 years old when these were run! ( I sure remember the 'Kirk is a Jerk gag!)

I also remember thinking "haven't we seen this technology before?" when I watched "Encounter at Farpoint" and they showed the holodeck.

Yup, you are not alone, lurkercowboy.
