Re-Animating?

I'm sure if it were going to happen, it would have in the 40+ years since this show came out.

But wouldn't it be an interesting idea to update these episodes with better animation and the original music?

Some of the scripts are worthwhile, and it's part of the legend of Trek, since it uses so many of the original actors' voices. It's just too bad it didn't have better production values.

Would love to see that. 3D with original voice files

I rarely advocate reshoots, but this is one of those time I think it might be worth doing.

reply

Agreed, I'm cautious about re-tooling anything. But the heart and soul of these stories are the voice acting and the scripts. As long as a set of GOOD artists, not overly beholding to big-money studio interests, took on the artwork, and if they found artists who are long-time lovers of TOS and TAS, then I think the product they could produce would be quite special.

One of my real beefs with Filmation and Hanna-Barbera was the fact that their stuff didn't have the smoothness of classic WB or Disney films.

I now understand that the reason for that was budgetary. They simply didn't have the money to hire the animators, nor probably the time.

I wonder if the 3D to emulate 2D process that Disney expermented with could be used here ... just a thought.

reply

It's not just the smoothness; it's the lack of art. I recall some of those early anime films which were anything BUT smooth, yet had such beautifully drawn stills that it didn't detract from the beauty of the finished product. TAS just didn't have a feel of artistry in most of the character animation, so any modern techniques would require animation from the ground up, as well as any fully hand-animated work.

Yeah, I think I agree with that. I really liked some of the backgrounds combined with the music, but the character animation was lacking.

I don't know how someone would tackle reanimating that series.

reply

That's what I was thinking, too. The backgrounds were sometimes nice. But the characters had no life. It's as though they gave the character ani to the bottom rung in the studio.

"HOW" to go about re-animating would be pretty easy, in terms of logistics. How to procure the funding, the rights and the will to do so... quite another matter. The sad part is, there's not likely the fan base or potential fan base to warrant the expense or even get the attention of TPTB.

Were it up to me, and I had Trump's money, I'd call up Don Bluth and get him to assemble a team to tackle it.

I like the way they've introduced new CGI and special effects into the classic Star Trek episodes, and I don't think the originals were particularly lacking. The animation on this series is pretty poor though, I wouldn't mind seeing it redone, as long as it was done well.

reply

I would love it if this happened. They are good stories and all the voice components are there, and sounds can be enhanced.

This is a very good candidate for reworking and re-releasing. I would certainly buy it and put it alongside my existing Star Trek collection. The re-animating/sound team could also provide commentaries on what they did and why. A lot of them would no doubt be Star Trek fans and so we would get real passion.

Maybe even the team behind the Family Guy Star Wars episodes.
