Odyssey of the McCrarys'

I saw the 'Odyssey' episode myself as a child, perhaps my first time allowed to
sit up late, and like others never forgot it.

Later when reading of the exploits of the McCrary family of the early 70s- a family of killers now oddly forgotten- I at once saw the genesis of this episode.

Terrifying and sadly real.

The book 'Death Roads' by Orville Trainer gives the real basis for this tale.

I was not aware of this episode or the backstory - but there is an overview on the crimes, particularly to one Winchell's donut shop waitress, in this news feature from 1988:

Very sad chapter of history. 'Nuff said.

Beyond chilling and very real. I recently saw the two part episode and looked up their story. Sadly, one of their victims is from my city (Portland).
