Any up to date news on Richard O'Sullivan?

Has anyone got any updated news as to how Richard O'Sullivan is doing? I'd heard on a previous message he wasn't as poorly as previously reported but that was a while ago and it would be nice to know if he's in better health now and even possibly thinking of working again.

Hi Haden,

According to a newspaper report from a month or two ago, Richard recently had an operation on his gums and had to have several teeth removed, he was in hospital for over two weeks and was in quite a bit of pain according to the report. However, prior to that he did some voiceover work for the soon to be released 'Carry On Teacher' DVD and there was a picture of him posted online with some of the other actors who took part, he looked very well although he's gained quite a bit of weight by the look of things. Hopefully this recent health problem isn't too serious as it sounds as though he wants to work again, even if it is just voiceovers. He still lives in the retirement home, but I gather, at least before the latest illness, that he has been in good health and is happy.

Thanks for that Twighlightnight! - I have been off sick for about 5 weeks and been watching Man about the House on Paramount every day almost without fail. I can vaguely remember seeing it when it was first broadcast but I would have been about 7 years old. I just think, on reflection, that it is one of ITV's most underrated shows. The writing is pretty slick for a seventies ITV sitcom and the performances by the regular cast seems fresh and likeable even today. It's such a shame that circumstances took over and Richard has had this period when he has been unwell and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we haven't seen the last of him on the telly - he's one of our finest comic actors in my opinion. It's nice to know that he's still active and has the desire to work again. I'll be looking out for the Carry on Teacher DVD too!

No problem Hayden. I couldn't agree more with you, MATH is a gem of a show and is one of the rare 1970s sitcoms to have stood the test of time. As you say, Richard is a damn good actor who has never really been given the credit he deserves - let's hope he does recover enough to do some more work, although I doubt we'll ever see him doing anything too high profile again. I know the Carry On box set which is released in January features his commentary on the Carry On Teacher film, but I'm hoping that the film will be available to buy on its own too, don't fancy parting with £100+ just after Christmas.

Know what you mean!- not a big Carry On fan myself to be honest. Just checked on Play.com and Carry On Teacher DVD is available from 29/1/07 at £9.99 delivered. Presumably Richard's commentary is on it.

I hope it's available to buy on its own too. I have seen it on Play and a couple of other sites, but no mention of the extras yet. If you haven't seen it, it is worth getting anyway as Richard is great in it, he was only about 14 when it was filmed but he steals the show.
