Brian Wilde took time off due to ill health. That was when Frank Thorton (Captain Peacock of Are You Being Served) came in as Herbert Truelove. He was only supposed to do a few episodes, but Brian Wilde decided to retire permanently. Several actors from the show have died: Bill Owen (Pancreatic Cancer), Dame Thora Hird (Stroke), and Gordon Wharmby (Lung cancer).

Don't forget the losses of Michael Bates, Michael Aldridge, John Comer, Joe Gladwin, Danny O'Dea, and Tony Capstick.

Hello. I thought I would take a moment to let fans of the series know about the shows website. summerwine.co.uk is the online home of the series. The site holds a huge amount of information about the show, the latest news and very latest official publicity shots from the forthcoming series.

A new series is due to begin broadcasting in the UK soon, and a series for 2006 is due to begin filming in the summer in Yorkshire.

On the subject of Brian Wilde..........Alan J W Bell, our producer, did in fact approach Brian to return to the show if only for a special guest appearance for the 2001 Christmas special. Sadly, Brian declined stating that he feels he has 'done' summer wine. Alan has asked many times if Brian would like to return but he has declined on each occasion. But there is still the chance that one day the warrior will return....AGAIN!

If anybody would like to ask any summer wine questions, you can leave messages here or email me at [email protected] or visit the website www.summerwine.co.uk
